  2. The Amazing Discovery • On March 29, 1974, four farmers in Xi’an, China were drilling water wells, when they discovered some pottery fragments and ancient weapons in the ground. • They had no idea they had just unearthed what would become the largest archaeological find of the 20th century.

  3. Why were the Terracotta Warriors Built? • The first Emperor of China was QinShihuang. • He helped unify China, and even developed a system of weights and measures. • He made politics, the economy, and the military better. • However, he destroyed many ancient records, including Confucian writings. • He was obsessed with the afterlife, and tried to find the secret to living forever.

  4. Emperor Qin • He was told that “in the middle of the sea, there are three supernatural mountains—if you go there you will be immortal.” • He died when he was 50, and his tomb was enormous. • His burial site had been constructed years before his death. • He built THOUSANDS of life-size soldiers and horses to protect him in the afterlife.

  5. Types of Pits at the Site • Thirty-one pits of rare animals and birds have been unearthed within the burial site. • Ninety-eight sets of stable pits were found with pottery jars, lamps, etc. • There were also mass graves of people who probably died while making the burial pit for Emperor Qin. • There is a pit of two sets of bronze chariots with horses.

  6. The Main Pits • Each soldier had a different human face. • All the soldiers were originally colored to have beautiful life-like features. • But when the first pit was exposed to the air, after being buried so long, they quickly faded to having no color at all. So they are keeping many pits still covered. • There are also terracotta acrobats, and other civilian-type statues. • Archaeologists are still trying to unearth the thousands of soldiers still buried at the site.

  7. The Impact Today • The terracotta warriors are open for the public to view today, in Xi’an. • Xi’an was the ancient capital of China. • These warriors help us learn about the Qin dynasty, so that we may learn more about Chinese history.
