  5. Maps and Fire Exits • Pick up a map of Little Run the first day you volunteer. • Please note the fire drill exits and be prepared to exit the building in the event of a fire drill.

Helpful Hints Arrival • Arrive at agreed upon time with staff member whom you have coordinated your volunteer time. • Call or email the staff member ahead of time if you are unable to come in on that day. • Park in the lower parking lot. • Please do not park in fire lines or the bus lane in driveway of school. • Be sure to sign in and get a volunteer badge upon arrival. • Remember to sign out in the office as you leave. Confidentiality • Please do not discuss your observations of students with anyone other than the classroom teacher. • Please be there for all students in the classroom.

  7. Helpful Hints (cont.) Supplies and Equipment • Upstairs Workroom next to room 133. • Library contact: Wendy Beaumont at 703-503-3500 or WBeaumont@fcps.edu. Copying • Please use the copier in the workroom next to room 133. • Allow teachers to use the copier first. • The office copier is reserved for office staff. • All flyers must meet the Flyer Distribution Regulation and be approved by an administrator. • All flyers directed to Diann Gericke. For more information, please refer to the “Helpful Hints for Little Run Volunteers” flyer on the Little Run website (www.fcps.edu/LittleRunES) . To obtain a hard copy of this information, please contact the Little Run office staff at (703) 503-3500.

Teaching Tips • Follow the teacher’s lead and instructions. • Try different techniques and approaches. • Be fair. • Familiarize yourself with the teacher’s classroom routines and procedures, and support her/his behavior management plan. • Consistency is key. • Establish rapport. • Give time to think. • Encourage each child to give his or her best. • Remember you are volunteering for all children.

  9. Troubleshooting • Be prepared for your own child’s reaction. • Be flexible and supportive. • Remain calm. • When in doubt, seek clarification from the teacher.

Health and Safety What to do if you suspect child abuse • Talk with the classroom teacher and/or school counselor • For more information, please refer to the “Health and Safety Information” flyer on Little Run’s website (www.fcps.edu/LittleRunES). Familiarize Yourself with Emergency Procedures • Fire drill exits • Tornado drill procedures • Lock Down drill procedures
