  1. WISE mainrivers WFD-ECRINS matching and advances in linear referencing Alberto Lorenzo, ETC-SIA / EEA alberto.lorenzo@uma.es Right click to “Change Picture” to your institutional logo and adjust WISE GIS-IT Workshop – Copenhague, 7-8 May 2012

  2. Index • WISE mainrivers • WFD-ECRINS integration • Ourapproach: integrating WFD reportinginto ECRINS (why? Issues – canals; advantages: calculations – wateraccounts, cross-cutting) • Themethod (history, new developments) • Transfer RIVER_CD screenshots • Dynamicsegmentationprocess in detail • Advantages: routes reportingbasedontables? • Future • Planning2012: canals, groundwater

  3. 1. WISE MainRivers WISE mainrivers are themainriversreportedby MS complyingtheWFD Thedefintion of mainriversby WFD establishes a threshold of 500 sq.kms Situation: map of themainriversreportedbyMS we are workingwith: (April 2012)

  4. 1. WISE MainRivers • First version built in 2010 • Refers to data reported until August 2010 • New draft version: released in April 2012 • New version contains previous version plus new rivers • Methodology for the new rivers had to be revisited as the previous is very difficult to maintain (April 2012)

  5. 2. WFD-ECRINS integration Ourapproach: integrating WFD reportinginto ECRINS (why? Issues – canals; advantages: calculations – wateraccounts, cross-cutting) WHY? ECRINS is a comprehensive, regular, connecteddatabase Advantages Calculations and accounting (connecteddatabase: rivers + lakes + groundwater…) Cross-cutting !? First time to do it

  6. 2. WFD-ECRINS integration • Themethod (history, new developments) • 2 steps • TransferringWfdRiver_cdintoEcrins • TransferringWfdsegmentsintoEcrins

  7. 2. WFD-ECRINS integration • Themethod (history, new developments) • History (Howwedidbefore) • New developments (Improvements)

  8. 2. WFD-ECRINS integration • Themethod • Outcomes: • Mainriversbelowsurfacecriteriaremainmainrivers • Riversnotreported as main, abovesurfacecriteria COMM/EEA/ETC tocontactMS

  9. 2. WFD-ECRINS integration Select a segment and trace downstream

  10. 2. WFD-ECRINS integration • Tributaries:selectsegments >500 sqkmflowinginto a river

  11. 2. WFD-ECRINS integration • ‘Identify” of thefeatures

  12. Identify the river to be found Automation • Previous: tr_identity is identity of WFD main river with FECs • Start with ECRINS final segment • Get TNODE value as to_node • Select C_Node where NodID = to_node • Find closest tr_identity (select by location, 250m), where exutoire = 1 • get: • CODE_ARBO • River_CD

  13. 2. WFD-ECRINS integration Result

  14. 3. Dynamicsegmentation

  15. 3. Dynamicsegmentation Dynamic segmentation is the process of transforming linearly referenced data (commonly called ‘events’) stored in a table into a feature that can be displayed on a map We will consider the WFD as the events and the ECRINS database as the routes

  16. 3. Dynamicsegmentation Dynamic segmentation process in detail: steps Dissolve the rivers with the WFD id River segmentation Each vertex of the route will have a new value with the distance from the starting point Create waterbodies WFD river segmenas are located into ECRINS main rivers

  17. 3. Dynamicsegmentation • Dynamic segmentation: ADVANTAGES • Routes reportingbasedontables • Dynamicinformation vs. Staticinformation • Ifsegmentationchange in WFD: is OK • If new features are added in WFD: is OK
