  2. Vision Through rigorous, challenging, and accelerated educational and work experiences involving partnerships between high school, CTE, community college, and healthcare organizations, we will prepare students for rewarding careers in health related fields.

  3. Overview of Project • Clare-Gladwin Middle College (CGMC) is a partnership between: • Clare-Gladwin Regional Education Service District • Mid Michigan Community College • MidMichigan Health

  4. Overview of Project • CGMC serves students 11th-12th who: • Show an aptitude for healthcare • Want to fulfill high school requirements while learning about healthcare • Want to participate in clinical rotations • Want to earn college credits

Student Support Services • Services Offered: • Transition from high school to college • Academic tutoring • Monitoring student progress • Career exploration & guidance • Healthcare Club • Service Delivery Personnel: • CGMC Mentors • High School Tutoring (LEA Tutors) • Students/Peer Mentors • MMCC Academic Support Center (ASC) Students feel the CGMC is a good transition from high school to college and will help them assimilate into college for real in a year or two.

Student Recruitment • Meetings with counselors, teachers, & principals • Presentations at parent/student meetings and student orientations • Counselors/teachers target students with interest/aptitude in health care for enrollment • Local service club presentations • CGMC Web site • Local news articles

Faculty Recruitment • CMGC is not a traditional middle college with separate faculty for the middle college • High school faculty are employed by the local schools • College faculty are employed by Mid Michigan Community College • There were 2 full time CGMC faculty and 2 part time for the program in 2009-10

  16. Integration & Training of Staff • Local staff development of high school staff, college faculty, and healthcare staff occurs within their own venues • CGMC is not currently providing any integrated training

  17. Professional Development CGMC staff have been involved in professional development including: • Middle College National Consortium Conference • State Middle College Seminars • Mentor Training at MMCC • Team Meetings

Impact Data: Students • 7th-9th grade: 20 students participated in summer camp • Students particularly enjoyed exploring: • Sim-man and nursing lab at MMCC • Tour and viewing a surgery at MidMichigan Medical Center of Clare • Animals at the veterinary clinic • Visit to Central Michigan University

  19. Impact Data: Students • 11th grade: 5 students enrolled • 12th grade: 24 students enrolled • 25 students enrolled the full school year • 4 students enrolled in one semester

  22. Impact Data: Staff Courses for fall and winter semesters included: • Intro to information systems • Freshman English composition • Fundamentals of communication • Medical terminology • Orientation to pharmacy technician • Psychology • Intro to Biology • Anatomy & Physiology

  23. Impact Data: Staff “The 2 CGMC students I have now are among the best. They have also out performed many older students and contributed a lot to the classes. My online courses are highly interactive and the students and I engage in ongoing discussions throughout the semester. Your students were well prepared, clear thinking and respectful to other students, even when they were disagreeing or correcting the other student. Excellent modeling of what I hope for with this experience.” CGMC/MMCC Faculty Member

  24. Impact Data: Staff • CGMC has established relationships with: • 5 superintendents • 5 high school principals • 5 high school assistant principals • 9 high & middle school counselors • 28 business partnerships

  25. Partnership Support • Advisory committee includes representation from: • Clare-Gladwin RESD • Mid Michigan Community College • MidMichigan Health • Central Michigan Community Hospital • Local schools • Local businesses

  26. Partnership Support • University support: • Articulation agreements between Mid Michigan Community College and • Ferris State University • Delta College • Michigan State University • Office space has been allocated to CGMC at Mid Michigan Community College

  27. Coordination of Calendars • MMCC scheduled classes specifically around the CGMC schedule • Working towards a coordinated CGRESD calendar • Purposely created a flexible calendar to meet the needs of all students (including evening & online classes)

  28. Student Transportation • Coordinated with local districts (Career Tech Programs) & county transportation to ensure that transportation is not a barrier to students • Students enrolled in college classes are allowed to drive themselves to MMCC

  29. What Went Well? • Mentor support has been very instrumental in student success. • Collaboration with MMCC has been wonderful! • Partnership with MidMichigan Health has been an invaluable resource. • Student participation, community partnerships, & parental support. • Job shadowing is an important component and has been extremely well received by students.

What Do We Need to Improve? • Difficult to coordinate schedules with five individual school districts • Michigan Merit curriculum requirements have been tricky to weave into design • State school funding is not stable – need to focus on long-term funding outside of the state • Sharing the perception of the middle college, especially since CGMC is not a traditional design • Stability of CGMC Leadership

  32. Three Significant Lessons • Try to develop stability in leadership at the beginning – changes in leadership can cause different visions and/or new starts/stops in the process • Be flexible to the needs of your own community – they may not fit the “traditional middle college model” • Involve local school counselors early in the planning stages

  33. Advice to New Grantees • Recognize that despite the cultural changes in your community, the various roadblocks, and lack of funding – this makes a SIGNIFICANT impact on students who may not have gone to college and the program IS WORTH IT!
