  1. Telescopes Brodi & Nathan Kozak

  2. What is a Telescope? • an optical instrument for making distant objects appear larger and therefore nearer. One of the two principal forms (refracting telescope) consists essentially of an objective lens set into one end of a tube and an adjustable eyepiece or combination of lenses set into the other end of a tube that slides into the first and through which the enlarged object is viewed directly; the other form (reflecting telescope) has a concave mirror that gathers light from the object and focuses it into an adjustable eyepiece or combination of lenses through which the reflection of the object is enlarged and viewed.

  3. Types of Telescopes There are two main types of telescopes: Refracting telescope Reflecting telescope

  4. Refracting Telescope • A refracting Telescope is a telescope in which light from an object is gathered and focused by lenses, with the resulting image magnified by the eyepiece.

  5. Reflecting Telescope • A telescope in which light from the object is gathered and focused by a concave mirror, with the resulting image magnified by the eyepiece.

  8. About Keck…http://keckobservatory.org/about/the_observatory • “From the summit of Hawaii’s dormant Mauna Kea volcano, astronomers at the W. M. Keck Observatory probe the local and distant Universe with unprecedented power and precision. Their instruments are the twin Keck Telescopes—the world’s largest optical and infrared telescopes. Each telescope stands eight stories tall, weighs 300 tons and operates with nanometer precision. The telescopes’ primary mirrors are 10 meters in diameter and are each composed of 36 hexagonal segments that work in concert as a single piece of reflective glass”
