  2. ALL ABOUT IMPETIGO Impetigo is a common and contagious skin ailment. The epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin, gets infected by bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes. As a result, it is more common to see a rash on the face, arms, and lower legs.  Impetigo can affect anyone, although it is most frequent in children between 2 and 5 years old. Cuts, insect bites, and rashes like eczema can be entry points for the infection. However, it is possible that it can appear on otherwise healthy skin. Impetigo has been around for a long time.  When the Latin term importer was translated into English in the 14th century, it meant "to attack." Bacteria flourish in warm, humid environments. In northern latitudes, impetigo tends to peak in the summer and fall. However, it's common in hot and humid settings all year round.

  3. Signs and Symptoms In children, impetigo lesions are more likely to occur on the face. They may appear on their arms or legs at times. The diseased regions are smaller than a dime but larger than a quarter. Initially appearing as little blisters, they break open to reveal red, damp skin underneath. After a few days, a gritty, golden crust forms on top, spreading outward from the center. Ethyma, a more severe form of impetigo, develops when the infection spreads to the deeper layers of the skin. A darker and thicker crust than normal impetigo develops on your youngster if this occurs. Irritation from Ecthyma is common. Scratching an infected place might spread the virus quickly if your child does so. This might cause lifelong scarring and changes in skin tone if you don't get it treated.

  4. How is impetigo treated? Mainly antibiotics treat impetigo. For minor skin irritations, antibiotic creams or ointments may be prescribed. If your infection is serious, you may need to take antibiotics by mouth. Your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic based on the germs that caused your impetigo. It's critical to finish your antibiotics. Your doctor may also advise you to wash the affected areas with soap and water. Wash your hands frequently. This helps prevent the infection from spreading. Cover the damaged portions of your body. This can help prevent illness from spreading to other parts of your body and others. With proper treatment, the infection usually clears up in a week. Scars from infection are rare. Getting help promptly also avoids serious problems. If you have impetigo frequently, your doctor may need to look for a skin condition that makes it difficult to fight the infection. AMI Skin and Hair Clinic's most important takeaways Hands should be washed often. As a last resort, use an alcohol-based sanitizer. To prevent scratching, keep your fingernails trimmed regularly. Throw away the tissue when you sneeze. Children with eczema or sensitive skin should be bathed at least once a day (if not more often).

  5. Avoid scratching wounds and cuts. Keep your child from scratching any cuts, scrapes, or wounds that they may get. Hand-wash any cuts, scrapes, or other injuries that occur. It's time to apply an antibiotic lotion to the wound. Use hot water to clean your undergarments, towels, and bed linens. Impetigo is primarily treated with antibiotics. You may also be prescribed an antibiotic to take orally. There are major consequences if impetigo is not left untreated. The sooner you get treatment, the less likely you will have complications.
