  1. GPS SS6G9a. Explain the major concerns of Europeans regarding the issues such as acid rain in Germany, the air pollution in the United Kingdom, and the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl, Ukraine. Acid RainAir PollutionNuclear Disaster

  2. Germany: Acid Rain CAUSES EFFECTS Smoke from factories & power plants Eats holes in statues & buildings Car and bus exhaust Damages soil and trees Pollutes rivers Kills wildlife

  3. Germany’s Acid Rain Solutions • Factories use water power instead of coal. • Laws reduce car & factory emissions. (Smoke/exhaust) • New energy sources – wind and solar power.

  4. UK: Air Pollution SMOG • Air pollution caused by sunlight + car & factory exhausts Great Smog of 1952 • Lasted 4 days • Increased crime • Slowed transportation • Thousands died

  5. United Kingdom Smog Causes • Burning coal • Car/ diesel exhaust • Factory emissions Effects • Asthma • Pneumonia • Blackens buildings • Threatens wildlife

  6. UK Air Pollution Solutions • Smokeless zones (no smoky fuels) • Cleaner coal • Increased use of electricity & natural gas • Laws to make cars produce cleaner exhaust • People drive less

  7. Ukraine: Nuclear Disaster

  8. Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster • On April 25th -26th, 1986 the World's worst nuclear power accident occurred atChernobyl in the former USSR (now Ukraine). A chain reaction in the reactor went out of control creating explosions and a fireball which blew off the reactor's heavy steel and concrete lid. • The Chernobyl accident killed more than 30 people immediately, and as a result of the high radiation levels in the surrounding 20-mile radius, 135,000 people had to be evacuated….forever.

  9. Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster • Reactor was buried in concrete. • It still is not safe. • Cancer rates have increased. • Radiation has been discovered all over Europe. • Because of wind currents, a mistake in one country can affect other countries!

  10. Chernobyl Disaster Leaves Radioactive Wild Boars Roaming Germany
