Key findings • Domestic RETS can help to reduce fuel bills and CO2 emissions, however, a ‘fit and forget’ approach may mean that technologies do not operate at optimum performance • Many residents have experienced financial and non-financial benefits, however, it is necessary to educate them on how to derive maximum benefit from the use of the RETS • Organisations that deliver domestic RET projects need to adopt a rigorous change management process, covering issues such as consultation and engagement with residents, education of staff and the development of sustainable maintenance strategies

Impacts and benefits • The generation of valuable data about the performance of the eco-homes and their impact on residents • The data are being used by SYHA and Solar Century (the technology suppliers) to optimise the performance of the eco-homes. • SYHA and Rotherham MBC are embedding the lessons and good practice from the project into new eco-home schemes • The data has been/will be published in conference and journal papers, and disseminated through events, CPD and teaching activities

Impacts and benefits • Development of a strong collaborative relationship between SHU, SYHA, Rotherham MBC and Positive Sum • Craig Jackson has registered as a part-time PhD student at SHU • SHU and Positive Sun undertook an independent evaluation of the Summerfield Eco Neighbourhood in Birmingham, on behalf of Family Housing Association • SHU and Positive Sum have secured funding from the Eaga Partnership Charitable Trust for a two year study into the role of RETS in reducing fuel poverty

  9. Impacts and benefits • SYHA, Rotherham MBC and Swepco are currently developing a new solar retrofitting scheme at Henley Rise, which SHU and Positive Sum are an integral part of • SYHA and Family Housing Association are exchanging knowledge, lessons and good practice with each other

Impacts and benefits • Raised awareness of our work and developed new relationships • Examples include the Homes and Communities Agency, RSLs, National Energy Action, npower, AAG Swepco, Sanyo and Mitsubishi • Dissemination events held in Sheffield and Birmingham in March 2009 • Presented at the AUDE Annual Conference, the EAUC Annual Conference, The National Housing Federation Green Homes Conference and the International Conference on Sustainability in Energy and Buildings
