  1. Science and Multimedia: Planning your multimedia-based project

  2. You  finished product

  3. Follow my 7-step process. . . • And things will go much easier for you, I promise! • If you know what you’re doing, that’s cool, but I strongly suggest you adopt the cornerstones of my process to maximize your benefit from my training.

  4. The Seven Steps: • Define • Identify • Divide • Pay attention • Allocate • Do • Link

  5. Define • Define the end product components as modularly as possible • e.g., “I want a 4-section web site with one 2-4 minute embedded video” • Feel free to consult with me as to the feasibility of whatever you may be looking to do.

  6. Identify • Identify the different technologies you’ll need to use to complete your goal • You don’t need to know specifics, though that might help. • e.g. • web page creation, • movie editing, • exporting the finished movie to a web-ready format, • image creation/editing

  7. Divide - 1 • Divide your project into manageable, logical sections. • Following the current example, you might begin by viewing the web site design and movie editing as two separate tasks.

  8. Divide - 2 • Subdivide the tasks even further along the lines of your web site’s four sections and the scripting, shooting, and editing of your movie. • Determine whether or not the tasks have to be executed in a particular order.

  9. Pay attn. • Pay attention in the relevant training sessions. • You’d be surprised at how many people don’t follow this step! • Also, determine if you’ll need to seek additional information not covered by the training sessions on your own.

  10. Allocate • Allocate enough time to do your work. • It may take some time to figure out how long it takes you to, say, develop one section of your site, which is why you should overestimate if possible. • Also, allow enough time to ask questions if you should need to.

  11. Do • Do the work. • (most important step)

  12. Link • Link the divergent sections of your project, • which in this case would be the video and web components.

  13. In conclusion. . . 1 • At every stage of this process, you’ll want to compare your progress against your original goal.

  14. In conclusion. . . 2 • Ask yourself: how does this particular stage help me achieve my end product?

  15. In conclusion. . . 3 • This will help you stay focused and decrease the amount of time you waste on tangential pursuits.
