Findings During the course of 1 year, the percentage of children who had lost one or both parents increased from 12%to17%.
Findings • Caring for the sick • Funeral activities • Absenteeism • Repetition • Achievement • Textbook use
Classrooms and teachers • Large median class sizes (grade 2=90; grade 3=70; grade 4=62) • Large age range (putting younger girls at higher risk) • Teacher mobility (50% turnover during one school year)
Recommendations • Promote continuity of instructional and emotional support. • Provide instructional materials to support out-of-school learning. • Support greater flexibility for grade promotion. • Assume teachers will be expected to teach classes they have not been trained to teach. • Succession planning.
