  1. Fossils • Fossil- is an evidence of an organism that lived in the past (can be animals or plants) • Give us information how animals and plants live in the past • Tells us how long life existed on Earth (age of a fossil) • Old Latin word that mean “to dig” • Tells us a story • Evidence of living things that turn to stone • Take a L-O-N-G time to develop • Majority of fossils are found in sedimentary rocks • Most common types of fossil rocks are limestone, sandstone, and shale

  2. Two Types of Fossils • Body Fossil: Are remains of an animal or plant, like bones, shells, or leaves. These fossils can show what an animal or plant looked like. • It can be bones, teeth, skin impressions, hair, shells, whole-body, petrified wood, or insects trapped in tree sap.

  3. 3 Types of Body Fossil A. Mold- cavity or hole, impression B. Cast- when the mold gets filled in • True Form- real body part • ice, tar pit, sand

  4. 2. Trace Fossil: anything that shows behavior or sign of activity • Records the activity of animal or plant (what it did) • Fossils show evidence how an animal lived • Examples: nest, footprint, burrows, track ways, fossil poop Example of trace burrows Example of trace footprint

  5. Which fossil is the oldest and newest? • The rocks that are located at the bottom are the Oldest Rocks (they can be like 3.5 billion years old) and the one at the top are the newest rocks. • The oldest were deposited first. Over period of times, newer layers were deposited over old layers. • For the fossils to form, animals or plant are buried in sediment layers. Over time, more and more sediment covered the remains. The parts of the animals that didn't rot (usually the harder parts likes bones and teeth) were encased in the newly-formed sediment.

  6. Compare and Contrast Organisms Past and Present

  7. Ichthyosaurs Dolphin Similarities: Dorsal fin have tail fin eat fish Live in water (ocean) vertebra long snout Mammals Differences: I- has an extra fin Tailfins are different shaped I-have larger eye, tailbone, larger ribcage D-longer body, not thick, detached bone I-beak looks longer
