  2. Infinitive The form of the verb we find in the dictionary is called the “infinitive”.

  3. Infinitive This is expressed in English by “to …”, e.g. to play, to think, to sing

  4. Infinitive In French the most common regular verb in the infinitive is the –er verb, e.g. jouer = to play If we learn what to do with one -er verb, we know what to do with almost all of them!

  9. The Present Tense The Present Tense in any language tells us what is happening now Je joue is an example of the French present tense In English je jouecould mean I play I am playingor I do play

  10. To form the present tense: Subject pronoun + the verb stem + the appropriate ending

  11. The stem In –er verbs the stem is formed by removing the –er. jou er
