  5. Stacking Cups! You have been hired by a company that makes all kinds of cups- foam hot cups, plastic cold cups, paper cups and more- of different sizes. For each of the kinds of cups it makes, the company needs to know the measurements of the cartons that can hold 50 cups.

  6. Stacking Cups! • Make a table and record in it the measurement data (number of cups & height of a stack of cups). • Make a coordinate graph of each data set. • Describe what variables are being investigated and the relationship between the variables. • Predict how tall a stack of 50 cups would be and explain how you made your prediction. • For each kind of cup, recommend the inside dimensions of a carton that would hold a stack of 50 cups. • Compare results of different kinds of cups, noting similarities and differences.

Stacking Cups! • Extended Thinking Task (30 minutes):Present (via KeyNote on your iPad) to the cup company the dimensions needed for a 50-cup box for the large hot beverage cup and for the small hot beverage cup. Construct a viable argument about the aspects of this box. Be precise! In your required explanation, give the volume of the stack of cups like Mr. P taught in the mini-lesson, and give the dimensions of the box. Tell how you and you arrived at these dimensions. Use all the Mathematical Practices (look on the chart)! Use your rubric to make sure you hit all the requirements!

You show complete understanding of what they are asking you to do. To get 3 Points you must: Your answer is mostly correct. You made a minor mistake in your response but it still shows that you understood the questions and assignment asked. To get 2 Points you must: Your answer is partly correct. You show that you understand the concept a little. You response may be unfinished or unclear. To get 1 Point you must: You show that you only know the smallest amount about the assignment they are asking you to answer. To get 0 Points you must: No correct answer. You cannot show that you understand the question.
