  1. Negative versus Positive Space Do Now: Copy down the definitions for the following vocabulary words on your handout. Negative Space: empty space, space around an object or form; also called white space. Positive Space: The areas of an artwork occupied by forms or images; the opposite of negative space. Please start keeping copies of these handouts in your folder. You will be quizzed on your knowledge of these words.

  2. In this picture you can see either faces or a vase depending on what you consider the positive or negative space. On the handout color in with your pencil on image 1 to make the faces as the positive space. Then color in image 2 to make the vase appear as the positive space.

  3. Now do you see? On your handout in the space provided, write down how choosing negative space and positive space changed the way you looked at this image.

  4. Now let’s practice You have three sheets to work on your negative and positive space. Think carefully about what you choose. You might be surprised at how your artwork looks when it is finished.
