  2. Risk Assessment • What are Risk Assessments? • Who’s responsibility are they? • Why do we have to do them? • What risks should be assessed?

  3. What are Risk Assessments? • A careful examination of what, in your work, could cause harm to people. • The aim is to make sure no one gets hurt or becomes ill.

  4. Who’s responsibility are they? Everybody’s Mainly management

  5. Why do we have to do them? • So that no one is hurt or becomes ill. • Legal requirement. (Man. Reg 3) • Contract documentation. • Part of safety culture • Increase’s awareness. • Reduce claims • Increase morale

  6. What risks should be assessed? Ignore the trivial and concentrate on significant hazards

  7. What is a HAZARD? Anything with the potential to cause harm.

  8. What is a risk? The likelihood of the harm being realised.

  10. 5 Steps Step 1 Look for the hazards • Involve employees and safety reps • Hazards may include what ?

  11. 5 Steps Step 2 Decide who might be harmed and how. Employees Cleaners Visitors Contractors Maintenance Young persons/ Expectant Mothers etc.

  12. 5 Steps Step3 Evaluate the risks and decide whether existing controls are adequate or should more be done. • Safe Working Procedures • Reasonably practicable • Cost / benefit

  13. 5 Steps E.g. To reduce risk drive at 10 mph. • Reduce chance of crashing • Reduce injuries • Inconvenience to you & others • Outweighs the benefit • Not reasonably practicable

  14. 5 Steps Step4 If you employ five or more people you must record the significant findings of your assessment. Tell your employees about your findings . Suitable and sufficient - not perfect.

  15. 5 Steps Step5Review your assessment and revise it if necessary. • New machines • New substances • New procedures

  16. Revision • Look for the hazards • Decide who might be harmed • Evaluate the risks • Record your findings • Review your assessment Good health is good business.
