  3. Related Text 1 Making choices is an integral part of the transition into the world. Amy Wilson explores the possibility of the multitude of decisions that need to be made becoming overwhelming in Shoes. She suggests that as a result, we can become entangled in small decisions and neglect the larger ones that have a stronger impact on our lives. To convey these ideas Wilson crafts her artwork using visual techniques. The colour palette is the most immediately obvious aspect of the artwork. Wilson has chosen to use a limited range of muddy colours, making the viewer feel slightly overwhelmed and suffocated and emphasising that this is how the “many decisions” that need to be made can make one feel. Individual colours within the colour scheme reinforce this idea. The floor, walls and curtains work together to create a dark base for the image, which is supported by the blackness of night through the window. Night itself is a time traditionally associated with lack of vision and increased confusion a meaning which is, in turn, lent to the rest of the muddied colours. The mat and shoes in the centre of the image are in slightly brighter shades of pink and brown but, like the decisions that they represent, they are only superficially colourful as a result of their close proximity to the brown of the surrounding floor.

  4. Related Text 1 The proportions and positioning of each element of the image is carefully constructed by Wilson to convey to the audience the overwhelming nature of decisions. The central figure of the image is the girl on the bed. Although she is central she is bent over to tie on shoes, effectively hiding her face. This positioning has multiple significances. In leaning over it is clear that the girl is completely absorbed in her task and therefore blind to the more importance facts and choices in the world around her. In hiding her face, her emotions and ability to connect directly with the audience and the outside world is frustrated. Both actions portray the girls willful ignorance. The proportions of the girl and carpet in comparison to the massive floor and walls is another constructed element with the image. The girl seems to be overwhelmed by the darkness of the floor and is instead absorbed in the small inner world she has created for herself. Wilson is emphasising that her attitude is true of the decision in front of her and the larger decisions of life.
