  2. Intro The story takes place in a far away land, in a distant time. The story is wrapped around Princess Irene and her nurse. The story was more of a modern-day story of Romeo and Juliette, in the 1870s.

  3. Protagonist • Princess Irene – The daughter of the king and his late wife; died soon after childbirth. • She was sent to live in a castle, halfway down the mountain. • She is raised by her nurse

  4. Antagonist • The Goblin King – He is evil • Only wants to harm the King and his family, for banishing the goblins • He is very bitter, because his first wife was a human, and she died when living underground with the goblins.

  5. Central Conflict • The central conflict was the plan that the goblins had devised to capture the Princess and make her the wife of the Goblin Prince;

  6. Minor Characters Lootie • Lootie – raised Irene; cared for her as if she were her own • Irene – was a ghost; protected Irene from danger • Curdie – was son of a mine worker; helped save Irene from the goblins Great-Great-Grandmother Irene Curdie
