  1. Internet Connectivity in Resource centres: • Opening new Information and communication technologies for information sharing. Presented by Martha Nderitu Communications Commission of Kenya. 13th June 2011

  2. Introduction/ background information • 10.2 internet users • 25.9 per cent of the population have internet access. • 84.726 broadband subscriptions representing 0.97 percent of total internet subscriptions.

  3. Rationale for establishing e-resource centres • Community libraries located in remote areas • Poorly developed infrastructure • Integrate ICTs in an already existing service • Enhance access to ICT services by communities surrounding the libraries • Promotes a sense of ownership

  4. Internet market structure • The main Internet service operators: Kenya Data Network, Jamii Telkom, MTN, Access Kenya, Wananchi online, Communication Solutions and Africa Online. • However, the mobile operators have with time become the largest ISPs following the landing of the undersea cables and the use of the unified license to provide internet (EDGE plus Broadband).

  5. Broadband market structure • There are three undersea optic fibre cables, SEACOM, East African Submarine Cable System (EASSy) and TEAMS. • The Kenyan Government has invested in building a national fibre backbone, referred to as the Fibre Optic National Network (FONN) • FONN has an extensive reach linking a sizeable number of district headquarters in the country.

  6. Internet connectivity and education • Internet connectivity is an integral part in e-learning. • Implementation of a national e-learning strategy requires reliable internet connectivity and proper management of information systems.

  7. ICT application benefits • Provides an efficient channel to deliver a wide range of basic services in remote and rural areas • Narrows digital divide • liberates technical and human capacity

  8. Long term benefits • Information about market prices/health • Information about the structure and services of public institutions • Political visibility, rights and responsibilities • Access to knowledge, education and skills • Access to income generating activities

  9. Services to be offered • ICT education and training • Support to education • Internet services • Dissemination of relevant information • Access to government information • Access to digital library services • Email services

  11. Other ICT initiatives • Development of digital content for the High schools education sector. • established 24 school based ICT centres. • ICTs for persons with disabilities.
