  1. Cell EnergyPhotosynthesis vs Cell Respiration

  2. 1 Minute Quick Write What do plants need naturally to survive?

  3. Notice the illustrations of the plant leaf below. What plant cell organelle do you recognize?

  4. Chloroplast • Chloroplasts are present in plant cells. • They capture the light energy from the sun and convert it into chemical energy (food molecules called glucose, C6H12O6). • That process is called Photosynthesis

  5. According to the chloroplast diagram to the left…. What is the chloroplast taking in (the reactants)? The same as what we said plants need to survive What is the chloroplast producing or giving off (the products)? Let’s figure out the equation for Photosynthesis? Glucose (C6H12O6 )

  6. Use your manipulatives to create the equation for photosynthesis(Place the correct name of the molecule below it in the equation and make sure your equation is balanced using the correct coefficients) ReactantsProducts Write out your correct balanced equation of photosynthesis.

  7. Does your equation look like the one below?

  8. Check your understandingExplain the process of Photosynthesis to a neighbor using the following terms : carbon dioxide light energy glucose food oxygen gas process water chloroplast plants Write out your explanation using the above terms.

  9. Think Pair Share There is a saying “If you talk to a plant, the plant will grow”Explain, to a neighbor, how the phrase above is relevant and what process is taking place.

  10. AcrosticWrite a word for each letter of the word photosynthesis that relates to the topic P H O T O S Y N T H E S I S

  11. Cellular Respiration

  12. Review of Photosynthesis Before we go into cellular respiration, let’s review what happens in the process of photosynthesis. (use the words of your manipulative)

  13. Let’s take a look at how plants and other cells use the glucose that is produced. Energy is packaged in glucose during the process of photosynthesis. However, the glucose molecule is bound together. Do you think cells can use this glucose in its current form? No So what has to happen to the glucose, if it is bound together, in order for cells to use it? The bond has to be broken and a more useable form of energy should be produced.

  14. GLUCOSE ( C6H12O6)

  15. GLUC ( C6H OSE 12O6)

  16. GLUC ( C6H OSE 12O6)

  17. ENERGY GLUC ( C6H OSE 12O6)

  18. ENERGY ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate)

  19. If glucose is used and energy in the form of ATP is produced, in which cell organelle do you think cellular respiration takes place? mitochondria What types of cells have mitochondria? animal cells, plant cells, fungus cells & protist cells

  20. Mitochondria • Mitochondria convert chemical energy stored in food molecules (glucose, C6H12O6 ) into energy (ATP) that is more convenient for the cell to use. • This process is called Cellular Respiration

  21. Now we are going to build our equation for Cellular Respiration using the same manipulative.

  22. Manipulative Place your arrow in the center of the equation. What do we start the reaction with? If glucose is being used and energy in the form of ATP is produced, place those two word pieces of your manipulative on the correct side of the arrow. Place the remaining word pieces on the side of the equation you think they should go.

  23. Does your Cellular Respirationformula look like this one? C6H12O6 + 6O26CO2 + 6H2O + ATP What will the cell use the ATP for? (energy for the cell to use for other processes) Name some specific process of the cell.

  24. In your own words, explain what you think this analogy is saying?

  25. Check your understanding Why do you think cells under go the process of cellular respiration? Explain the process of cellular respiration using the following terms: carbon dioxide food molecules glucose cells oxygen gas process ATP Mitochondria water

  26. Going further intoCellular Respiration

  27. Complete the following chart What do you notice about the reactant and products of cellular respiration in comparison to the reactant and products of photosynthesis?
