  1. Trådløse Trondheim (TrT)/ WirelessTrondheim and itsTrT Network lab Steinar H. Andresen, Dep. of Telematics, Norwegian University of Science and technology (NTNU) Email: steinara@item.ntnu.no

  2. TrT: “Trådløse Trondheim”Research and ”Business” ”TrT Access” WiFi open air network, with roaming (handover) and location service. A shared physical infrs structure that can be used by multiple service providers (ISPs) TrT Network Lab& TrT Service Lab Service Lab Mobile services Radio Lab, New radio technologies Radio propagation research ITS Lab ”The instrumented raod”

  3. TrT The first steps Wi-Fi

  4. Wireless Trondheimas a research area • TrT Access (or ”Broadband commons”) • A wireless network in Trondheim city for ”everyone” (initial user groups covers: NTNU, The County, The City administration Trondheim, The Electric Power Company of the town and Adressa the dominant regional newspaper). This gives a potential aggregated number of users in the range 40 to 50 000 (includes all students at the univ. and all high school students). • TrT Network lab • A full-sized outdoor lab suitable for testing new networking technologies. • TrT Service Lab • A lab for mobile service development and testing.

  5. TrT Access Coverage on opening day, 26. September 2006 - approx. 80 APs

  6. TrT Access Coverage on 1. Nov. 2006 - approx. 120 APs

  7. TrT Network lab Infra structure • Physical Infra structure • Broadbands connections (Gb/s, fiber og Cat5+ kabel). • NB: TrT Network lab has its own communincation links(not shared by TrT Access) • Power Supply, • Mounting facilities and (agreements with property owners!) • Climatic safe housing for experimental equipment, etc. • Preinstalled servers and experimental equipment • Measuring equipment • Programmable routers and access points • Servers to facilitate research, e.g a location server

  8. Q-free AS TrT Network labInstitutions and firms • Norwegian Road Authority Sør-Trøndelag County • Traffic surveillance center • NTNU: • Dept. of Electronics and Telecom. • Dept. of Telematics • Dept. for Computers and Inform. technology • The Q2S Center • SINTEF ICT Communication systems UNINETT Radionor Communication AS • Norwegian Road Authority, The directorate • Technology section • NTNU: • Dept. of civil engineering and transport, • SINTEF Technology and society, • Transport safety and - informatics • Lab for behavior analysis at NTNU/SINTEF

  9. TrT Network lab as a research test bed for radio systems and mobile services Novel radio systems and technologies • Antenna systems and implementation of MIMO ( Multiple input/output systems) • Advanced modulation methods/systems • Product design, cost efficient esthetical design and integration with other equipment along roads and streets. Novel systems solutions in wireless access networks • Seamless handover between heterogeneous systems. • Prioritised handling of emergency calls (and other important traffic) - testing of principles to be utilised for crisis management. • Pilot testing of new principles to ensure quality of service,, information security and correct payment/charging.. • Principles of location determination and navigation, possibilities of comparing technologies..

  10. TrT Network Lab as a research area for Intelligent Transport Systems PROJECT EXAMPLES: • Testing of the technology platform for ITS (6 th. framework project “Cooperative Vehicle-Infrastructure System project”, ref. IST-2004-2.4.12-eSafety-Cooperative Systems for Road Transport) • Instrumentation for • Measuring environmental data g • Alerts/events or incident reporting • Cooperative driving/traffic behaviour • Prioritising public transport and emergency vehicles, adjusting the traffic lights according to traffic patterns, and events, etc. • ISA (Intelligent Speed Adaptation) technology testing the impact on drivers and traffic.. • CALM/WLAN design combined with road light plant

  11. TrT Network lab - possible future roads

  12. Infra structuresample cabinets andenvironment

  13. Road lamp integration?

  14. TrT Network lab gives • En city- wide physical high capacity communication network • Basic instrumentation and functions: • Communication with measuring points • Mounting space/sites • Power supply • Location server that can determine the position of any WiFi device • Report services (enabling scheduled testing periods)- to be developed. Radio propagation Road lightning Navigation ITS Environment QoS telcom Basic instrumentation and functions This enables A city- wide physical communication network • Project specific instrumentation tailored to every research groupsneeds.
