  1. Most Commonly Asked Question on HORNBEAM HEDGE

  2. Hornbeam is a deciduous tree that is native to the UK. It looks very similar to beech, and is a traditional form for hedging in the UK. The rounded and serrated-ribbed green leaves are associated with spring. Hornbeam leaves, unlike its rivals, will stay on the tree most of the winter in their gold-copper state. They look great and are preferred by some as an evergreen alternative.

  3. HOW TALL WILL HORNBEAM GROW? Hornbeams can be grown as fine trees. They are common in many UK woodlands. Many of them are very old and tall. They are a popular choice for hedges because they can be clipped and hedge made very well. Hornbeams respond well to regular trimming and grow and thicken slightly faster than beech. 4. HOW QUICKLY WILL A HORNBEAM HEDGE GROW? Hornbeam hedges grow quickly. One can expect to see 1.5ft (45cm), per year, once they are planted. To maintain its density and size, the hedge should be trimmed to its maximum height once it has reached its desired height. This will reduce the hedge's upward growth to a more manageable level, so it can be easily trimmed once per year.

  5. WHEN SHOULD I CLIP OR TRIM A HORNBEAM HEDGE? As with all hedges, hornbeam hedges should be trimmed annually in Spring and Autumn. Trimming in spring is a good idea to avoid bird nesting season.

  6. HOW FAR APART SHOULD I PLANT A HORNBEAM HEDGE? Hornbeams should be planted 1.5ft (45cm), or 2ft (60.6cm) apart in one row. Careful preparation is essential. You can find out how to care for your Hornbeam hedge once it is planted.

  7. HOW DO I WATER MY HORNBEAM HEDGE? It is important to water hornbeam hedges during dry periods or summer. We recommend that you use a leaky hose, sometimes called a porous pipe, to water your hedge. This will gradually leak water onto your existing pipe and allow it to soak in.
