  42. Introduction • Scene: Write 3 sensory details. The sun was shining through our living room window. (Sensory detail #1) The smell of bacon and rice permeated the air as my mother was cooking breakfast in the kitchen. (Sensory detail #2) I had just bought a brand new Lance Mountain skateboard, and since school was out, I was ready to ollie, kick-flip, and rail-slide my way to the local elementary school. As I sat down at the dining table with my board on my lap, the grip tape snagging on my pants, (Sensory Detail #3) my mother set my plate down and quickly placed next to the plate a medical dictionary. She said that I would be studying today instead of skateboarding, and from this point on, summer was not about creative expression but dutiful studying of anatomy, as my mother wanted me to become a doctor. It is the reaching that matters more than the attaining.

  44. How do you analyze evidence/quotes to support your point?

  45. THESIS: In the Novel, Bless Me Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya, the theme of filial piety causing a loss of identityis developed throughout the text by the use of figurative language. Say: “Oh why did my mother dream for me to be a priest! How would I ever wash away the stain of blood from the sweet waters of my river(Anaya 23)?” Mean (What does the quote “mean”?): This passage describes a scene in which Antonio is hiding in the forest while only meters away, Narciso was shot by the men on the bridge, crippling Antonio with guilt and fear from his mother’s dream for Antonio to be a priest. MATTER (How does this matter to the thesis?): In this case, Antonio’s filial piety toward his mother’s wish for Antonio to be a priest robs Antonio of his true identityas an innocent child because the future position of a priest forced onto Antonio an adult position of guilt. Antonio has to bear the burden of a priest, a burden he carries to respect his mother. Anaya uses the metaphorof a blood stained river to persuade the reader of the impossible task of erasing guilt which is compared to the impossibility of staining rivers let alone wash the stains away.
