  4. What is Ethics? • Definition • “Ethics is a collection of moral principles that set standards of good or bad, or right or wrong, in one’s conduct and thereby guide the behavior of a person or group within an organization” (Lombardi & Schermerhorn, 2010)

  5. History of Ethics • Part of healthcare since 4th century BC • Hippocrates • Hippocrates Oath • “foundation for the ethical guidelines for patient treatment by physicians” (p. 248) First, do no harm

  6. Areas of Ethics • 2 main areas in Healthcare • Medical Ethics • Issues that cause a practitioner to make a decision on a patient’s medical treatment • Bioethics • Issues that use a human being as medical experiments

  7. Areas of Ethics cont. • Care • Should be demonstrated • Concern • For the wellness of patient and each other • Compassion • Cornerstone of a successful healthcare organization • Community • Sense of community bolsters moral and patient health • Confidentiality • Knowing what to share is vital
