  2. Work in groups to identify how the following documents show evidence of how the Iroquois Confederacy created unity amongst the Iroquois.

  4. How does this document show evidence of the Iroquois working together? The Hiawatha Wampum Belt symbolizes the founding of the Iroquois Confederacy. Each square represents an Iroquois Nation.

  5. How does this show evidence of unity? THE LONGHOUSE AND SYMBOLISM Today when you see a picture drawn of a longhouse, the artist usually draws the longhouse with 5 smoke holes in the roof.  The artist does this to symbolically represent the founding of the Haudenosaunee (or Iroquois) Confederacy, which originally included  Five Nations.  The Five Nations are as follows: The Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca. 

  6. How does the following document show evidence of unity • The decision-making process mirrored the creation of peace among the Iroquois. The Onondaga introduced a topic and offered it to the Mohawk for consideration. When a decision was reached, they passed it to the Seneca. A joint decision was announced to the groups across the fire for deliberation. When these groups reached an agreement, they reported to the Onondaga Council Leader. If he agreed, the decision was unanimous. If not, the negotiation process began again with the Mohawk. If unanimity were impossible, the matter was set aside and the fire covered with ashes.
