  1. Learning Target 10-14-13 • I can analyze a poem for literary elements. • Essential Question: How do the parts of a story contribute to my understanding of it as a whole?

  2. DOL: 3 Rules for Semi-colons 1)  to separate 2 independent clauses (could be their own sentence) that are not joined by a conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so). •     Example:  Keith is captain of the squad; Eric is manager. 2) before an adverb (therefore, however, so, consequently)  that joins 2 independent clauses. •     Example:  Lisa is allergic to milk; consequently, she has to follow a special diet. 3)  to separate items in a series that are already separated by commas, but need further clarification. •     Example:  People came from Berkeley,  California; Eugene, Oregon; Houston, Texas; and San Diego, California.

  3. DOL: Re-write the sentences using semi-colons 1.  The contestants came from Dubuque, Iowa Memphis, Tennessee and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. 2.  I got all dressed up for the party however, my best friend wore jeans. 3.  Our school is overcrowded and consequently, a new wing will be added. 4.  My father is an accountant my mother is a lawyer. 5.  German is a difficult language to master however, if you plan to be a scientist, you may want to study this language.

  4. Independent Reading • Combine two sentences from your text using a semi-colon.

  5. RA-TA-TA • Review ballad and ode • Read “How We Survive” • Annotate for literary elements

  6. Workshop • Annotate the poem for literary elements • Answer the multiple choice questions and these: • How accurate is the author's description of loss?  Explain. • In what ways are "the laughter", "the irrepressible spirit," and "the encouragement they gave" important to the survival of those left behind? • Why does the author say that survival is how it should be?  

  7. Closing • Write a response to the poem. You must use a semi-colon in your response • (“It’s dumb; I hate it,” is not an option).
