  2. Why Study Abroad? • Learn about new places and cultures. • Meet new people and make new friends • Study new things • Learn to speak a new language • Develop leadership skills and independence • Create confidence and self-esteem

  3. Why I Studied Abroad… • Students have just heard about reasons to study abroad, but use this opportunity to let them know your perspective. By discussing your motivations behind study abroad, students may be able to relate and decide study abroad is for them.

  4. Who Can Study Abroad? • High School Students: They can go for the school year, semester or maybe just a few weeks out of the summer. • College Students They can study for a summer, semester, year, or even their entire college career can be spent abroad.

  5. How might you change after studying abroad 98% feel that study abroad made them more mature. 96% feel that study abroad increased self confidence. 94% reported that the experience continues to influence interactions with people from different cultures

  6. After I Studied Abroad • Make this slide your own by telling students the effects that study abroad had on you. You want them to understand that study abroad has lasting effects, and it will inspire them to hear how it has changed you.

Students have just seen a snippet of the locations that you can go through study abroad, so use this slide to focus on where you went. Doing this will make study abroad less elusive and more of a possibility by hearing about your experience.

  18. Musicians Nelly Furtado Singer-Songwriter who was born and raised in Victoria, British Colombia, Canada. She credits her ethnic background and childhood for their cultural influence which sparked her creativity. James Blunt Singer-Songwriter who was born in Tidworth, Wiltshire, England. He served in the British Army for four years before he began his singing career.

  19. Athletes Tony Parker plays for the San Antonio Spurs basketball team. He was born in Belgium, but raised in France. He holds 3 NBA championship titles and was also voted Finals MVP in 2007. He is a 3 time NBA All Star and has also competed for France at the national level. . Agnieszka Bibrzycka is a basketball player for the San Antonio Silver Stars. She is from Poland, and was named the Women’s European Player of the Year for 2003-2004 by the prestigious Italian paper, La Gazzetta dello Sport.

  20. Actors Mischa Barton was born in London, England and is known for her role as Marissa on the O.C. Hugh Jackman, was born in Sydney, Australia, and is best known as Wolverine in the X-Men movies.

  21. Living Arrangements • Living arrangements vary from one locations to another. Possibilities include residence halls, host families, and boarding houses. • In some cases you will have a meal plan, in other cases your host family will provide your meals.

  22. My time living in/with… • Living with another family or by yourself can be an intimidating concept for students. Help quell their fears by telling them what you experienced, and what are the positive aspects of this type of arrangement. You could include pictures or a funny story about something that was unexpected or a cultural difference.
