  2. Impact of Snood on the Females • Females Like BIG Snood. • Big Snood means ‘Good Genes.’ • The Snood has no function

  3. From the male’s perspective • Bigger snood= manlier man? • Does snood size matter to other males?

  4. The experiment • Male decoys vs. 60 live turkeys • Variables: snood size and turkey size • Levels: small and large for each • Treatments: small snood, 5 lb turkey (decoy 1) : large snood, 5 lb turkey (decoy 2) : small snood, 20 lb turkey (decoy 3) : large snood, 20 lb turkey (decoy 4)

  5. Four Groups

  6. Anticipated Difficulties • Sight of next pen. • Smell of previous turkey. • Noise of other turkeys. • Color of feather.

  7. Set up • 60 live turkeys • 15 turkeys in each treatment • Decoy in each treatment • Each group divided into 3 subgroups • 5 pens - one for each subject per subgroup

  8. The execution • Subgroups separate during entire experiment • Routines varied by half-hour intervals. • Pen completely reset after each trial. • Have decoy stand guard over ½ a lb. of feed. • Measure amount of feed left after 10 minutes.

  9. Execution (continued) • Day 1: small snood/small decoy vs. all groups • Day 2: small snood/large decoy vs. all groups • Day 3: large snood/small decoy vs. all groups • Day 4: large snood/large decoy vs. all groups • Groups go in same order each day.
