Issues at Hand “What’s different this time?” “Principals want flexibility and autonomy, but they don’t want the extra work” “The longer the parents’ experience with LAUSD, the less they trust us” “When we first started, we usually had at least 5 principals call in, and now we usually have 3 (of 70)” Lack of a clear message, trust and engagement must be addressed

  4. When Trust is Lost … “[Everyone is] just trying to stay above water. It’s my 31st year in the district and I’ve never seen it so bad.” “What’s different this time, and why should we have confidence that it will work?”

  7. Principals Train Each Other • Experienced principals introduce BSA to small groups of new participants

  8. Principals Train Their Community Principals required to explain BSA to their community and why the mistakes from the past won’t be repeated

Create and Foster Adoption of a Wiki Online tool deployed by Central Office for collaborative document editing and conversations • Adoption requires • Necessary information be exclusively available on the wiki • Commitment to providing answers quickly via the wiki • Discipline to force people to find answers on the wiki • Someone has to curate it • Once adopted • One always up-to-date document • People will answer each other’s questions • An easy place to identify success • Tolerates disorganization

Action Plan • Create a consistent message • Schedule principal peer to peer training • Build presentation for principals to educate their community about the BSA • Deploy wiki and discuss rules of engagement with Central Office • Begin media outreach to recruit external partners • Plan who will monitor events and wiki to identify wins
