  3. Graduation Requirements • Math 4 Credits • Science 4 Credits • English 4 Credits • Social Studies 3 Credits • Career Tech, 3 Credits Foreign Language, and or Fine Arts • Health .5 Credit • Personal Fitness .5 Credit • Electives 4 Credits Graduation 23 Credits

  4. Grading System A 100 – 90 B 89 – 80 C 79 - 74 D 73 – 70 F* 69 & below • *If your student fails a course, he/she may have to go to summer school or repeat the course. • A failing grade will remain on the transcript even if the student repeats the course and earns a passing grade.

  5. Grade Point Average • GPA determined by quality points A=4 B=3 C=2 D=1 F=0 • Honors classes sophomore level and up earn extra .5 quality point; AP classes earn an extra 1.0 quality point • 3.5 or higher GPA for Honors graduate • HOPE GPA (see GaCollege411.org)

  7. High School Credits • Sprayberry High School is on a modified block schedule • Students earn ½ of a unit of credit each semester for each A/B course they pass • Students earn 1.0 unit of credit for each block course they pass • Each semester students can earn 4 units of credits (8 units of credit per year)

  8. CREDITS For PROMOTION • 5 Credits = 10th Grade, must include 1 credit in LA, Math, Science • 10Credits = 11th Grade, must include 2 credits from LA, Math, and Science • 16 Credits = 12th Grade 23 Graduate

  9. What is a Transcript? • A cumulative record listing all high school courses, grades, and attendance • Used by colleges and employers • Includes all grades earned in high school • Includes Grade Point Average (GPA) & class rank • Weighted GPA (with honors/AP pts) • Unweighted GPA

  10. End of Course Test (EOCT) • Language Arts 9th Literature, American Literature • Math CCGPS Algebra, GPS Algebra Math 1, Math 2 • Science Biology • Social Studies US History, Economics

  11. EOCT continued • 9th Graders EOCT = 20% of final grade • Graduation = a passing score on the EOCT in each core subject area

  12. GHSWT • All students must pass the Georgia High School Writing Test for Graduation. • GHSWT is given to all 11th Graders in September each year • Retake in Summer and 12th grade

  13. Attendance Counts • Being in school is a huge contributor of School Success • Reasons for excused absences are determined by State Law • Cannot make up work for unexcused absences • More than 10 absences results in suspension of drivers license

  14. PSAT • Who: All 10th Graders • What: Preliminary SAT • When: Wednesday, October 17 • Time: 8:25 a.m. • 9th and 11th Graders may take the PSAT for a $14 fee. Please see Mrs. Denison outside at the conclusion of this meeting.

  15. PINNACLE This application allows you to view your student's grades and attendance over the Internet To get Pinnacle access please see or e-mail Ms. Fitzgerald in the front office

  16. The ACE center • Academic Center for Enrichment • Open 5 days a week during lunch • Make-up assignments excluding tests or quizzes • Tutors from National Honor Society and Student Government Association

  17. Agenda • Use as an organization tool • Should be used like Middle School • HS teachers expect students to check & prioritize assignments & tests themselves • Parents please help with this tool. Check it and make sure students are using.

  18. Clubs and Activities • List is in Agenda Pgs. 22 - 26 • Get Involved – It is a large indicator of HS success – and colleges like to see HS involvement on applications • Students should listen to announcements for club registration or see the teacher

  19. SOPHOMORE YEAR • PSAT • SAT/ACT – If Appropriate • EOCT depending on class schedule • College Credit Now: MOWR – Dual Enrollment

  20. JUNIOR YEAR • Junior Advisement • PSAT – National Merit Scholarship Program • Post Secondary Research/ Visits • SAT/ ACT (SAT is given at SHS)

  21. SENIOR YEAR • Narrow Choices – Post Secondary • SAT/ACT • Complete Application Process – Apply to College Day • Financial Aid & Scholarship information • FAFSA • Hope (Georgia Student Finance Commission) • Final Choice of School

  23. Academic Achievement • Getting into College is not getting easier. • The #1 predictor of student success at post secondary level is the rigor of high school studies • Students must focus on opening doors not shutting them • Select multiple options and research admission requirements.

  24. We Want You To Succeed! • GPA = Grade Point Average • Perfect - 4.0 or higher • College admissions: • Four year college admissions • 2.5 expected minimum • Competitive Universities– 3.75 + honors and Advanced Placement • Below 2.0 = 2 yr school or small private college

  25. Steps to Help With Success • Monitor Agenda for assignments • Email teacher • Check blogs • Register for Pinnacle Internet Viewer • Tutoring • Before and After School • ACE • Outside Agencies/Private Tutors • Parent/Teacher Conferences

  26. WHO CAN HELP? • Teachers can help with academic issues and class problems. Teachers can be reached via email using firstname.lastname@cobbk12.org or through the Sprayberry web site. Tutoring is available for all subjects. • Counselors can help with planning courses, personal issues, academic issues, and college & career planning. • Administratorscan help handle conflicts with students or teachers. • The Social Worker can help utilize school and community resources when faced with personal and economic challenge • Clerical staff can help you with Pinnacle, sending transcripts, making appointments, etc. • Prevention/Intervention Center – parenting information regarding issues adolescents face today (i.e. cyberbullying, depression, loss, tobacco/alcohol/drug abuse, etc.)
