  6. What do they mean? Synonyms: Words that share the same meanings with other words. Antonyms: Words that mean the opposite of other words. Homonyms: Words that sound alike but have different meanings.

  7. What’s so special about synonyms? 1) You can create a mood through the use of different vocabulary. What are they doing? They are strolling on the beach.

  8. What’s so special about synonyms? They sound fancy, and this makes you appear more intelligent. Ex. The movie was scary, but the actors were bad. Ex. The film was horrifying, but the actors were atrocious. Key for communication and understanding on all levels! Ex. Cross-cultural communication Ex. Reading/ Writing

  10. Why think about antonyms? Understanding Use of prefixes (mis, dis, mal, in, un): Ex. Official- Unofficial Ex. Flexible- Inflexible Ex. Functional- Dysfunctional

  11. Homonyms? Area of difficulty for second language learners Very common spelling error seen in writing! Obvious example: See vs. Sea Another obvious example: There vs. Their vs. They’re
