  1. Factors of Modernization What factors would a sociologist looking to predict how a culture will change over time? Socio-economic level by region Immigration / Birth / Death Rates Numbers of people achieving level of education. Leadership change/ Political Status/Role of women in society

  2. Modernization – Advancements and change of a given culture or society. Vocal Minority Influence Theory – that the outspoken cross-section of the population is the most influential. Silent Majority – those of the masses of society that refuse to speak out against or speak up for a given cause.

  3. Motivators of Change in Society • What are some motivators of societal change and modernization? • Economic State • Events • Laws that are outdated • Political Actions • International Situations

  4. Current Trends in American Families • Delayed Marriage • Childlessness • Dual-earner marriages • Delayed childbearing • Remarriage • One-parent families How have these trends changed the American society?

  5. American Social Movements • Reactionary – Try to prevent a type of social change and return society to a past way of being; often using fear and violence. • Conservative – Try to protect prevailing values from what are seen as threats to those values. examples?

  6. Continued… • Revisionary – Try to improve some part of society through social change; usually use legal methods and focus on a single issue. • Revolutionary – Seek a total radical change of existing social structure, overthrow existing government and replace it with their own version; often involve violent or illegal methods.
