What is Modernization? • Process by which a society’s social institutions become increasingly complex as the society moves toward industrialization. • Sociologist study 2: social change in less-developed countries and others analyze the effects of modernization on social life and the natural environment in more-developed nations

  3. Modernization Theory • More developed nations modernized because they were the first to industrialize. • Modernized countries serve as models • Modernization will most likely produce the same social changes in the less as it did in the more developed

  4. World system theory • Views modernization in terms of the world economy • World system comprises 3 types of nations • Core- most powerful developed nations – US, Canada, Japan – control most of the worlds productive, technological, and financial resources • Peripheral – poor countries in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Control few productive resources, and depend on core nations to buy their main products – raw materials • Semi peripheral – in between core and peripheral nations. May be industrialized but may not play a central role in the world economy Ex: smaller Western European countries (Spain), South Korea, Taiwan

  6. New types of Technology In today’s world • We live in an age of rapidly changing new technology • What is most of our technology focused on? • Why does this say about our society? • Why might be our next logical step in terms of technology in the future?

  7. Debate Time! • The class will divide up into three groups. You will need to debate for next class the following topic: • Why technological invention has had more of an impact on today’s societies, the smart phone, social networking, or CGI (computer generated technology/imagery) ? • Broken down into 4 categories: • Biggest impact • Most positive effect on society • What new technologies have come out of this product – good/bad • Why might this invention pave the way for in terms of the future? (real life applications) Winning team gets bonus points on the last test!
