    1. The Digestive System Ms. Melton’s Class Fall 2006 This Power Point presentation is intended to be used during discussion with students on the digestive system. This should really be used as an orientation lesson to the digestive system. In addition, it can be saved to a computer in the classroom so students can go through the presentation on their own during free time. Talk with students about what they see in the picture here. Do they recognize or know any of the parts and what they do. Make a KWL chart or a graphic organizer for them to make predictions about what the different parts have to do with digestion. This can be done in their science logs. Have students touch their own bodies to find out where these parts are located. This Power Point presentation is intended to be used during discussion with students on the digestive system. 2. What Happens When You Eat? Ask students what they think happens to food when they eat. Use the above questions as guides to help bring background knowledge to the surface. Students should write 2-3 sentences about what they think would happen if they couldn’t digest food. Ask students what they think happens to food when they eat. 3. So, What Is Digestion? breaks down food into smallest parts body absorbs it nourishment The digestive system is made up of the digestive tract and a few other important organs. The digestive tract is like a long tunnel with many sections and different areas (think of a waterslide). All the parts of the digestive tract and these organs work together to allow you to digest, which means getting what your body needs (nutrients and energy) from food, and then getting rid of the waste that's left over. http://kidshealth.org/kid/body/digest_noSW.html The digestive system is made up of the digestive tract and a few other important organs. 4. The digestive system is a series of hollow organs joined in a long, twisting tube from the mouth to the anus (see figure). Inside this tube is a lining called the mucosa. In the mouth, stomach, and small intestine, the mucosa contains tiny glands that produce juices to help digest food. Two solid organs, the liver and the pancreas, produce digestive juices that reach the intestine through small tubes. In addition, parts of other organ systems (for instance, nerves and blood) play a major role in the digestive system. http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/yrdd/index.htm Explain what each part does as the digestion process progresses from the mouth/teeth – esophogus – stomach – large intestion – small intestine – rectum. 5. Why is Digestion Important? In your lifetime, your digestive system may handle about 50 tons of food and liquid!! This makes your stomach and small intestine incredibly strong organs Have students brainstorm about the reasons for digestion – what it does for your body. Fill in any gaps in the brainstorm process. 6. What does the digestive system do? Stores and digests food Transfers nutrients to the body Eliminates waste Absorbs water into the body

    7. Label the digestive system. Use the following vocabulary words: anus, appendix, esophagus, gall bladder, large intestine, liver, mouth, pancreas, rectum, small intestine, and stomach
