  1. Elements, Compounds and Periodic Table

  2. Elements, Compounds and Periodic Table WALT: Identify and talk about a number of elements and compounds I must be able to identify the difference between element, compound and mixtures I should be able to identify metals and non metals in the Periodic Table I should know the symbols for a selection of elements

  3. Use your Periodic Table to write down the chemical symbols for the following elements • Copper • Magnesium • Carbon • Hydrogen • Gold • Zinc • Iron • Chlorine • Bromine • Potassium • Caesium • Sodium • Sulphur • Nitrogen • Oxygen • Argon • Fluorine • 3 others of your choice

  4. At the back of the room, there are a number of elements compounds and mixtures Make a table with three columns Walk around and write in the relevant compounds the names of the different elements, compounds and mixtures

  5. In pairs, spend 5 minutes inventing a way you would categorise all elements found on Earth • Write down your plan of how you would split the elements into different groups

  6. For the following compounds, write down the name and note down the elements that are bonded together to make them. HCl H2SO4 CO2 CaCO3 NaOH MgO FeO CuCO3 What do the numbers tell us?

  7. Who invented the Periodic Table? • Russian • 1834-1907 • First Periodic Table had just 63 elements (the only ones we knew) • Lined up elements based on their “ATOMIC NUMBER” Dmitri Mendeleev

  8. Now complete the two exercises handed to you on the sheets

  9. Plenary In pairs, test each other with 6 questions each on elements, compounds and the Periodic Table
