Colin Powell was born on April 15, 1937, in Harlem, New York. He graduated from the Reserve Officers' Training Corps in 1958 and began his career as an Army officer. He married Alma Johnson on August 25, 1962. A decorated veteran, Powell rescued his crew during a helicopter crash in Vietnam and received the Purple Heart in 1963. He made history as the first Black Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, serving two terms appointed by President George H.W. Bush. Powell's legacy continues to inspire generations.

When he was in Vietnam, Colin Powell rescued his whole crew from a helicopter crash. In 1963 Colin was awarded the Purple Heart, that is awarded to wounded servicemen in action. On Oct.3,1989 Colin became the first black Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In 1991 George Bush assigned Powell a second two year term as Chairman of the Joints Chiefs of Staff.
