  1. Acceleration Chapter 1, Section 3 Page 22 - 27

  2. WHAT IS ACCELERATION? • __ACCELERATION__ is the rate at which velocity changes. • Velocity is __SPEED IN A GIVEN DIRECTION__ • Acceleration refers to __INCREASING SPEED__. __DECREASING SPEED__, or __CHANGING DIRECION__.

  3. INCREASING SPEED • A car that begins to move from a __STOPPED__ position or __SPEEDS UP__.

  4. Increasing speed • An example of something increasing speed would be a dude about to get body slammed on the canvas! See below

  5. DECREASING SPEED • A car __STOPPING__ at a stop sign is called __DECELERATION__, or negative acceleration.

  6. Decreasing speed • An example of something decreasing speed would be a car locking up it’s brakes

  7. CHANGING DIRECTION • Acceleration can be a change in __DIRECTION__. • Examples: __TURNING A CORNER__ and __SWITCHING LANES__

  8. Changing direction • An example of something changing direction would be a loop roller coaster

  9. CALCULATING ACCELERATION • Acceleration = __FINAL SPEED - INITIAL SPEED__ /__TIME__ • Speed is measured in meters per second (m/s) and time is measured in seconds, the SI unit of acceleration is __METERS PER SECOND PER SECOND, or M/S2 • Meters per second per second means __EVERY SECOND THE SPEED INCREASES BY THE SPEED__

  10. GRAPHING ACCELEREATION • The 2 types of graphs that can be used are __DISTANCE–VERSUS–TIME and SPEED–VERSUS–TIME__.

  11. SPEED – VERSUS – TIME GRAPH • The line slants __UPWARDS__ means your speed is increasing. • __STRAIGHT LINE__ means acceleration is constant • __STRAIGHT and SLANTED LINE__ mean accelerating at a constant rate. • To calculate the slope, choose __ANY 2 POINTS ON THE LINE__. Then, __DIVIDE THE RISE BY THE RUN__.

  12. DISTANCE – VERSUS – TIME GRAPH • A __CURVED LINE__ means that an object is accelerating.
