  2. What was a Committee of Correspondence? • Groups formed by the colonists to help connect and share information from different areas. • Why were they important? • These groups helped the colonists organize against the British.

  3. What was the Boston Tea Party? • The Boston Tea Party was a defining moment for the colonists in their fight for freedom. • It began on December 16, 1773 when British merchants tried to import a large shipment of tea into the Colonies through the Boston harbor.

  4. How did the colonists react? • Since tea was still heavily taxed, the colonists made a stand and refused to allow the British to bring the tea on land. • The two groups argued passionately, and the British refused to turn around.

  5. What action did the Colonists take? • A group of men disguised as Mohawk Indians climbed aboard the ship and dumped 45 tons of tea into the harbor in protest • The tea would be worth $1 million dollars in today’s money!

  7. How did the British respond? • The Boston Tea Party angered the British. In response, they sent ships to blockade (cut off) Boston’s port until the tea had been paid for. • During this time, no ships could come in or out.

  8. What were the Intolerable Acts? • They were a series of new laws against the Colonists. • The new rules included restrictions on using the harbor, and that British soldiers could stay anywhere, including in Colonists’ homes!

  9. What was the Edenton Tea Party? • It was a boycott of British products by North Carolinian women. • It was called a “Tea Party” because that was now the term used for any anti-government movements.
