  2. Let Us Begin….. • On May 8th 1945, Germany surrendered & the European war was over for the allies. • Each of the allies got a zone of Germany • U.S. • Great Britain • France • Soviet Union

  3. The Potsdam Conference was held July 17th 1945 “They” decided what would happen with the fate of Germany and Poland. Joseph Stalin gained Poland, but only if he promised to allow free elections. The Potsdam Conference

  4. Consequences of the “split” • Due to the new boundaries, Germans moved westward to escape the communist threat. • During this move, ~ 2 million people died or disappeared and 12 million became homeless.

East and West Germany • With growing tensions between France, G.B. and the U.S towards Soviet Russia, Soviet Russia decided to seclude themselves from the world. • In 1947 France, G.B. and the U.S. decided to combine their territories and form West Germany. • Not too long after the Soviet Union formed East Germany.

  6. On April 9,1948, Stalin ordered all of American military personnel out of the eastern zone of Berlin. On June 24, 1948, all of water and land access to west Berlin was cut of by the Soviet Union. Beginning of the Berlin Airlift

  7. By July 1st, allied planes were starting to take over aid, goods, and medical supplies during all 24 hours of a day, Planes were landing in Berlin every 25 minutes. The Berlin Airlift was the first time in history were people were kept alive by airplanes. the US delivered 1,783,572.7 tons of goods, and the British delivered 541,936.9 tons of goods which in total was 2.3 Million tons from 277, 569 total flights to Berlin. the German people called the planes that delivered aid “Rosinen-Bombers” Berlin Airlift

  8. Just past midnight on August 12-13th Soviet soldiers drove through East Germany and built a massive wall across Berlin to stop East Germans from crossing to the West. The Berlin Wall
