  1. SUCCUS ENTERICUS:

  2. Small intestinal secretion: 2-3 L isotonic fluid/day • Brunner’s gland. • Crypts of Lieberkuhn. • Mucus from goblet cells. • Shed epithelial cell.

  3. Peyers patches Enterochromaffin cells- Paneth cells Paneth cells- defensins, guanylin

  4. Composition: Watery, Colorless. pH = 8 -9 (Alkaline fluid). Water – 98.5%. Solid - 1.5 %. Organic: Mucus , Enzymes. Inorganic : Na+ , K+, Ca+, Cl-, HCO-, PO4-

  5. Enzymes: 1. Enterokinase TrypsinogenTrypsin 2. Amylase. Starch maltose. 3. Lipase. Fat Fatty acid +Glycerol. 4. Peptidases. Protein Amino acid.

  6. 5. Maltase . Maltose Glucose. 6. Lactase: Lactose Galactose + Glucose. 7. Nucleotidases: Nucleotides Nucleosides. 8.Nucleosidases: Nucleosides Purines + Pyramidines

  7. Functions: 1. Complete digestion of: • Carbohydrates. • Proteins . • Fats. 2. Mucus – prevents damage of epithelium 3. immunoglobins- helps in intestinal secretion 4. Alkaline nature of brunner gland secretion- protects mucosa from acid chyme

  8. Functions: 5. Absorption of water(75%) Applied : Malabsorption syndrome

  9. Intestinal bacteria Normal intestinal flora Mainly in ileum E.Coli, Enterobacteraerogenes and Bacteroidsfragilis Functions : -Digestion and absorption of vitamins, minerals and water. • Synthesize vitamin K and B complexes • Helps in formation of short chain fatty acid

  10. - Inhibit inflammatory process, IL-10 • Bile salts are converted to bile acid • Brown colour to stool by forming pigments from bile pigments. • Produces gases- normal flatus • Odour of feces • Interferes in absorption of LDL and cholesterol.

  11. LARGE INTESTINE Mainly absorption of water. Slow passage of chyme. No villi. Crypts secrete isotonic solution. Numerous goblet cells. Composition: mainly mucous, HCO3-, K+

  12. Colonic bacteria: 8L Rectal administration of drugs.
