  1. Jhai growing, Lee letting go Lee ThornChairJhai Foundation 350 Townsend St., Ste. 309San Francisco, CA 94107 USA Voice/Fax: 1-415-344-0360 lee@jhai.org 9 September 2008

  2. The discussion for today • Our story • Where we are going • What we need

  3. How we began We were founded 10 years ago by Lee Thorn, a Vietnam veteran seeking reconciliation He returned to Laos seeking to help rural villages by listening to local communities They asked fortechnology with connectivity(among other things)

  4. means ‘hearts and minds working together’

  5. The first steps In 1997, Lee returned to his home near Silicon Valley and began a 10 year journey He started byrecruiting world leading volunteer management and technical experts – including software and hardware engineers

  6. He also raised money and partnered with leading organizations

  7. The first generation Jhai PC emerged… Off-grid power - 12-volt direct current battery, and the battery is charged by a bicycle-powered generator Local language - Open Office localized (word processing, spreadsheets, slides and more) Slow speed (low bandwidth) connectivity – access to the internet through remote relay station via wifi that connected the signal to a phone line over a hill and into the market town – 9 miles away

  8. ….and better versions have been developed Telemedicine - Neurosynaptic machine monitors and reports respiration, blood pressure, pulse, EKG, and temperature; provides 2 way audio-video with remote doctor, and provides simple patient records to share …all at dial-up speed … Energy efficient – all alternative power options can work, lower overall power required Low cost functionality – VERSION 2.0: 1.5GHtz,1-2GigRAM, flash pendrive or hard drive, running Windows or Linux with $200+/- JhaiPC, JhaiNetworks™ communications suite to foster knowledge sharing even for illiterates

  9. Let’s get into this a little more - Telemedicine Telemedicine is a way for villagers to talk and show themselves to a doctor someplace else And to share their health records, vitals and EKG, and then get a diagnosis and prescriptions so that they can make an informed decision on whether or not to go to the nearest hospital. This can save BIG MONEY as well as get the local health provider PAID Our solution is also sustainable, cheapest, and most accessible to internet no matter how slow the internet connection is

  10. Let’s get into this a little more - ‘Energy efficient’ These 3 computers plus screens plus the rechargeable telemedicine machine run at about 70 watts total. Your desktop x 3 Runs at 300-600 watts. This means all themachines in the village can be powered by a Jhai bike-generator or a solar panel or water or wind or even oxen going in a circle!

  11. Let’s get into this a little more - low cost and appropriate Maybe this doesn’t mean much to you: “1.5GHtz,1GigRAM, flash pendrive etc etc” Don’t worry. All it means is that the computer is fast, can run either Windows or Linux, as a no-moving parts machine or just as a normal PC, AND software includes free or low cost communication suite that even illiterate people can use. In our way of doing things local entrepreneurs choose what content (think applications like ‘Read, Write & Type’) that they think will bring them money based on what community members told them…and … All the JhaiPC costs is $188 to $224! The system including training and long-term support, will cost around $7000 for the entire village system. This is way cheap, cheaper than all the other systems we know about.

  12. Let’s get into this a little more - Jhai Networks ™ Jhai Networks™ communication suite is a way for even illiterate people to communicate. It is software that allows for peer-to-peer or conference audio-video communications While sharing and redlining any kind of application securely And even across languages in conferences with up to 300 places ….– just like the UN, except on the internet and cheap Empowering local languages using English

  13. However, we learned that a technology solution is not enough… entrepreneurs need to be empowered through training and by letting them design their own, profitable business 1 the entire village must be engaged 2 And outsiders like us must commit to never leave 3

  14. We have developed a successful model and tested it in Laos for over 10 years

  15. Awards and recognition have followed What people say about us How do you bring the Web to people who don't have phone lines -- or even electricity? With a level of ingenuity that would have impressed Robinson Crusoe, it turns out The NY Times reporting on the Jhai PC “He (Bill Gates) even wondered if it might be possible to make computers for the poor in countries without an electric power grid. The answer is yes, and things are going even further” The Economist reporting on the Jhai PC Award-winning technology Six international ‘best practices’ awards for ICT work

  16. Lee is now a recognized worldwide ‘thought leader’ • “What is a ‘thought leader’?” – Lee and friends … “This is true!” – Fortune Magazine

  17. A methodology to ensureeconomic sustainability emerged

  18. It is Pretty easy … It takes 5 steps Find the best local entrepreneur Hang out and talk with neighbors Teach accounting and facilitate planning Teach the technical stuff Follow up Details If the village health provider is an entrepreneurial type, empower her; if not, find a village entrepreneur to work with her. Hang out with them in the community for two days meeting people and engaging them in a dialog about what they want and what you know is possible with ICT (2 days) Teach accounting and facilitate rigorous, participatory business planning (3-4 days) Do this 10 villages at a time and include hands-on training on set up and networking through the most local technician you can get that can teach.(1-2 days) Follow up through a facility nearby created by an entrepreneur (we’ll help) available to 50 or more villages Jhai has a 90% success rate with SUSTAINABLE ICT-related projects over 10 years How people in villages can make money from computer stuff

  19. It might look like this …

  20. Jhai Systems – 24/7 - Making money from day one

  21. Jhai Systems – 24/7 - Making money from day one

  22. Jhai Systems – 24/7 - Making money from day one

  23. Jhai Systems – 24/7 - Making money from day one

  24. Development Styles Are Evolving Rural Poor Impact SUSTAINABILITY SOCIAL ENTERPRISE (Jhai) NGO CHARITY TIME

  25. Jhai is now in transition and has adopted a new strategy to GROW

  26. The discussion for today • Our story • Where we are going • What we need

  27. Jhai will remain focused on 2 areas 1 Providing hardware, software and communication solutions for rural villages Ensuring economic sustainability through training entrepreneurs, business model development and community engagement 2 …and we have set 3 goals for the next 6 months

  28. First, enabling telemedicine for the rural village will be our lead proposition WHY? Health of elders and children is first priority Of our friends in villages Jhai’s technology and methodology solves two key needs for telemedicine – economic sustainability and rugged technology

  29. Second, we will focus on India first WHY? Neurosynaptic will be our technology partner for telemedicine and they are based in India The Indian government will support The market potential is HUGE there

  30. Third, we will transition the leadership WHY? We can onlygrow with dedicated, younger, paid staff Lee is a visionary but needs operational expertise The board has been successful providing advice but will need to shift focus toward fundraising

  31. Our focus will be on these new projects, with India being critical Neurosynaptic has invited us to work with them in 1500rural Indian clinics providing JhaiPCs and sustainable solutions for telemedicine Another Indian program has asked to explore a 10,000 village implementation for telemedicine 1

  32. Our focus will be on these new projects, with India being critical Atlantic Philanthropies has asked us to explore telemedicine solutions for ALL rural clinics and schools in Vietnam. Atlantic Philanthropies must give away all its donor’s billions in next 10 years or so. 2

  33. Our focus will be on these new projects, with India being critical first effort The Ghana government and private telecom has asked us to demonstrate 100 computers over 10 rural centres where 10 different languages are spoken. This is step one in a country-wide implementation. The sponsor is THE leading ICT organization in Africa (the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre for Excellence in ICT) with proposed funding from a Kuwaiti entrepreneur. 3

  34. Our focus will be on these new projects, with India being critical “Hole in the Wall”, a very successful organization in India and Africa, has asked for250 Jhai PCs for Indian urban slums 4

  35. Jhai needs to build a foundation over the next six months – then scale up • Most Critical: • Hire a CEO and Operations person • Revamp board for fundraising 5

  36. The discussion for today • Our story • Where we are going • What we need

  37. Revenue goals for next year** excludes Philippines, ILFSET/India,Thailand, Laos, Brazil, Congo, S. Africa, China to be conservative

  38. Our Commitment: Jhai means ‘hearts and minds working together’ Solar powered installation in Lao PDR Jhai’s Commitment For 10 years poorer people who work with us have made enough money to sustain the programs they envisioned and they own. They cover fixed and running costs, capital goods replacement and any loan repayments themselves. We provide our green ‘best practices’ systems, products, and training - and just-in-time advice and support to them. We never impose. We never run away.
