  1. HEALTH AND FITNESS

  2. Health & Fitness • This refers to a persons physical wellbeing • HEALTHY – means free from infection so no coughs, colds, chicken pox etc • FIT – relates to how much physical activity you are capable of doing and how quickly you recover afterwards

  3. Developing fitness • Different types of exercise develop different aspects of fitness: • STRENGTH • STAMINA • FLEXIBILITY • AGILITY • SPEED • Cardiovascular efficiency is often used to measure fitness, this is how well the heart copes with aerobic exercise and how quickly it recovers afterwards

  4. DURING EXERCISE • During hard exercise we need to get more oxygen and glucose to our muscle cells so our breathing and pulse rate increases • Aerobic respiration is not efficient enough to meet our energy demands so anaerobic respiration also takes place: • Glucose lactic acid + energy

  5. Effects of Anaerobic Respiration • Hard exercise causes lack of oxygen in cells and the incomplete breakdown of glucose • The lactic acid builds up in muscles causing pain and fatigue • This is removed during recovery: OXYGEN DEBT • So continuing to pant provides enough oxygen to oxidise the lactic acid • The heart rate stays high to pump the blood through the muscles to remove the lactic acid and transport it to the liver to be broken down
