  2. Ways to Increase • Compensation www.communitylegalcentre.ca

  3. Tips on report writing • Date the report!! • Contact the clinic if you require more information or clarification about our request. www.communitylegalcentre.ca

  4. Tips on report writing • For extensions of time: • Therapy Report from Service Providers can greatly assist in getting an extension of time granted • Even limited information can make the difference in the Board’s decision www.communitylegalcentre.ca

  5. Tips on report writing • As much information as possible should be included in the report. • Names of the offenders • Time frame of the abuse • First contact with the service provider • Dates of counseling or stay at shelter www.communitylegalcentre.ca

  6. Tips on report writing • Information needs to be specific: • “Jane Doe attended at the shelter on December 5, 2007. She stayed at the shelter until December 10, 2007. The reason for her attendance at the shelter was because she was living in a physically abusive situation with her spouse.” www.communitylegalcentre.ca

  7. Tips on report writing • The largest part of a CICB award is usually for pain and suffering • Claimants are compensated based on their injuries • Claimants need to have evidence of their injuries • Therapy reports are key in providing this information www.communitylegalcentre.ca

  8. Tips on report writing • Details of the symptoms/difficulties • Look at impact on claimant’s eating, sleeping, relationships, education, work history • Psychological impact on the claimant is very often the largest portion of the injuries suffered. Reports are crucial in getting this information across and will assist in increasing compensation. www.communitylegalcentre.ca

  9. Tips on report writing • Connect the symptoms and injuries to the offenders – it is important that the injuries suffered are connected to the abuse. “As a result of the abuse by X, Y can no longer trust…” • If the abuse is cumulative or exacerbated because of numerous offenders, this should also be stated www.communitylegalcentre.ca

  10. Tips on report writing • Therapy Reports requested by CICB • Forms provided by CICB do not have enough room to provided detailed comments • Reports written on separate paper are acceptable and generally preferable www.communitylegalcentre.ca

  11. Tips on report writing • The clinic may request a report from a treatment provider in order to get an extension of time granted • The clinic may request an additional report later from the same treatment provider to update the client’s current status and level of ongoing treatment www.communitylegalcentre.ca

  12. Who pays for the records • During the application process, CICB will only pay for records they request • At the hearing stage, the Applicant can ask for a full reimbursement for any reports • CICB will pay full costs for hospital records and up to $100 for medical, dental, or therapy reports www.communitylegalcentre.ca
