  4. Overview of community service learning project Know Your Stats Campaign” • We walked on International Ave. to inform community members about resources that are in East Oakland that allow residents to take control of their health. In particular we encouraged people to go to Roots Community Health Clinic. • We created a brochure, that had resources and health facts including information about hypertension, blood glucose, and body mass index. • Group members created a short video clip for Roots Community Health Clinic. The video highlighted the importance of getting tested and knowing your health stats. • Our efforts hopefully helped to bring awareness about the importance of knowing your health stats!

Summary of the experience • The experience was eye opening as far as the information we received about how chronic disease are widely effected the community. • The statistics of minorities having chronic disease is beyond what we imagined. • We were very pleased to the fact that the people in the community were receptive to us. • We realized that our vision for this project was possible and we achieved it!

  8. Learning outcomes • As a team what we did very well with maintaining productivity. In every meeting we were able to adequately accomplish a task that ultimately, enabled us the ability to get a little closer to our goal of providing awareness to a community who greatly needed it. What we could have improved on as a team is communication--but due to our overall ability to complete tasks in an instantaneous manner, this minor flaw did not deem itself to hinder our success as a group.

  9. Take away from experience • Frey: "As a community health ambassador, I felt equipped to promote a better heath and access to care within my community. I am now aware about the high quality, affordable and easy to access care that community clinics provide. Plus, the importance of getting covered and getting care to learn about personal health numbers." • Adrienne: “This experience was very inspiring for me because I was able to see the positive impact that my group members and could make within our own community. Helping people gain access to quality and affordable health care is a major step towards creating a healthy, happy and prosperous community.” • Alexis: “From this experience I not only learned how to effectively work with a team, but I learned that a lot of people who resign in poverty stricken communities our very much unaware on crucial topics such as healthcare. For me to be given the opportunity to go out into the community and discuss with actual people about a facility that aids in getting people equipped with the necessary knowledge and health care--really taught me that regardless of how far away you live or your age that anyone can make a difference.” • Parris: “Being apart of CHA has taught me that if I try hard enough I really can make a difference in a community even if its by just talking to one person at a time. This program has also allowed me to build relationships with well-rounded intellectuals that share the same craving for health care change as I do.” • Mariah: “This experience allowed me to see that I can make a change within the community. Being able to inform residents of the community about the health options that they have was a great experience. I enjoying engaging in conversation and receiving receptive feedback.” • Robyn: “This experience has equipped me with the tools to help my community. It has brought me out my shell, and helped me realize that I can make a change. • Ludovic:“This program showed how much our community is in need of better healthcare and pushed me to work harder to achieve it. Also, when I first started this program, I wished to become a physician one day but thanks to Uchenna who made us believe that we will become physicians instead of wishing”
