  2. Introduction • Welcome • New discussion series • Desperate: having an urgent need or desire; leaving little or no hope • This webisode is about being desperate for a purpose • Pray • Discussion Question

  3. Discussion Question Think of a time in your life when you felt like you didn't have any purpose. Share this with your group.

  4. Testimony My senior year of high school I was looking at my future and trying to decide what direction my life was going to take. It felt like I was changing my mind every three months. First it was nursing, then EMT. Nothing stuck.

  5. Testimony (Cont) It felt like I was changing my mind every three months. First it was nursing, then EMT. Nothing stuck. It was like hitting a stone wall no matter what direction I took.

  6. Testimony (Cont) It was like hitting a stone wall no matter what direction I took. Looking at the future it was like a black hole. There was nothing.

  7. Testimony (Cont) Looking at the future it was like a black hole. There was nothing. I was asking the question what's my purpose?

  8. Testimony (Cont) I was asking the question what's my purpose? Discussion Question: Discuss in your group how you relate to Jessica's story.

  9. Discussion Question Discuss in your group how you relate to Jessica's story.

  10. Biblical Example • All of us at some point wonder “What is my purpose?” or “Why am I here?” • Jeremiah wondered the same thing until God spoke to him in Jeremiah 1:5 – 8

  11. Jeremiah 1:5-8 5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knewyou,    before you were born I set you apart;    I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” 6 “Alas, Sovereign Lord,” I said, “I do not know how to speak; I am too young.” 7 But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. 8 Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord.

  12. Biblical Example (Cont) • Jeremiah didn’t feel qualified or equipped, just like Jessica felt. • God promised to be with Jeremiah and rescue him.

  13. Biblical Example (Cont) • Later in Jeremiah’s ministry, God used him to encourage those surviving Jewish elders who were carried into exile in Jeremiah 29:11

  14. Jeremiah 29:11 11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

  15. Biblical Example (Cont) • God’s plans are always for our good • He gives us hope • Jeremiah surrendered to God’s purpose for his life and was able to be used to impact a generation

  16. Biblical Example (Cont) • We see that Jesus, knowing God’s purpose for him struggled to accept it in him humanness. Jesus cries out to God just before he is to be crucified in Matt. 26:36-39

  17. Matthew 26:36-39 36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” 39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”

  18. Biblical Example (Cont) • Jesus knew he was created for this very purpose: to die for the sins of mankind. • He agonized with his upcoming task. Luke’s gospel says:

  19. Luke 22:44 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.

  20. Biblical Example (Cont) • We find that Jesus surrenders his will to God’s and was used to change the world

  21. Biblical Example (Cont) • God created us for a purpose, it may not be what we thought it would be but once we answer his call we realize that we are fulfilled. Discussion Question: How do these Biblical truths relate to your own personal story in finding purpose?

  22. Discussion Question How do these biblical truths relate to your own personal story of finding purpose?

  23. Fulfillment When I was looking for purpose and direction I kept trying to seek the answers myself. It was only when I surrender completely to God that answers really came.

  24. Fulfillment (Cont) It was only when I surrender completely to God that answers really came. They didn't come right away but God gave me a peace for where I was in life.

  25. Fulfillment (Cont) They didn't come right away but God gave me a peace for where I was in life. Jeremiah 1:5 was very encouraging

  26. Jeremiah 1:5 Jeremiah 1:5 was very encouraging “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

  27. Fulfillment (Cont) God gave me purpose. He is my purpose. Church planting in the Tri-cities.

  28. Conclusion • God created for a reason with a purpose • He is our purpose no matter where we find ourselves • Keep our focus on Jesus(Jesus & Peter walking on water) Pray
