EXPEDITION EARTH AND BEYOND ProjectOverview • Inquiry-based student involvement program facilitated by ARES Education at NASA JSC • Provides a structure for students in grades 5-12+ to conduct authentic research about Earth and/or other planetary bodies • Provides an opportunity for student teams to put in data requests for new Crew Earth Observation images of Earth • Connects students with NASA JSC/ARES and other scientists • Provides professional development for educators Expedition Earth and Beyond: Getting students actively involved with NASA exploration, discovery, and the process of science.

EARTH SYSTEMS SCIENCE Awareness of complex interaction between systems • Program designed to incorporate an Earth System Science approach to studying Earth. • Students can consider systems that exist and play a role in other planetary bodies. • Enables participation by educators teaching a wide range of courses.

EXPEDITION EARTH & BEYONDBeta-Testing • ~500 students (~20 teams) from TX, ME, OR, CT, PA, AZ, LA, IL • Elementary (grade 5), Middle School, High School • Will participate for ~6 weeks • Will conduct research using a variety of Standards-aligned, inquiry-based (5E Model) curriculum and resources: • Spheres of Earth Activity • Blue Marble Matches Activity • Student Scientist Guidebook • EEAB Team Workspace Wiki

  6. Objectives: • Become familiar with the different Earth systems • Become familiar with features visible in astronaut photos associated with each system • Understand remote sensing terminology associated with studying imagery from space • Gain an interest in a feature to possibly investigate

  8. Objectives: • Learn about geologic processes/features on Earth. • Identify specific geologic features in astronaut photos. • Create a list of criteria to identify geologic features. • Gain an interest in a geologic feature to possibly investigate.
