Squanto, born in Patuxet in 1585, was a crucial figure in early American history. He facilitated trade between the Wampanoag and European settlers, exchanging furs for knives and beads. During his time in England, he learned English and returned to assist the Pilgrims with food and shelter. Tragically, Squanto discovered that his people were gone upon his return, leading him to join another Wampanoag group. His greatest achievement was teaching the Pilgrims essential survival skills, including hunting and farming, helping them thrive in a new world.
