  1. Climate Regions of East and Southeast Asia

  2. 1-What are the three different air masses that shape the climates of East & Southeast Asia? • One brings cold, dry air from the Arctic region. • The second brings cool, dry air from the west eastward across Asia. • The third carries warm, moist air from the Pacific Ocean.

  3. 2-In addition to wind, what else shapes the climates of East and SoutheastAsia? • The region’s landforms, shape the climates of E and SE Asia.

  4. 3-How does the climate of Siberia affect the climate in Mongolia and Northern China? • In winter, cold Arctic winds sweep across Siberia and lower temperatures in Mongolia and Northern China.

  5. 4-How does ocean current affect the climate of Japan? • A warm-water current flows north along southeastern Japan. • It adds moisture to the winter monsoon as it warms the lands. • A cold current flows southwest along Japan’s Pacific coasts. • It brings harsh, cold winters to Japan’s northernmost areas,

  6. 5- • a-What kind of climate does most of Mongolia and China have? • Most of Mongolia and northern China receive on enough rain to • create asteppe climate. • b-What are the characteristics of that climate • Extensive grasslands grow in this mostly dry climate • The grasses support cattle, sheep, goats and camels. • Some years, however, a small amount of rain falls, but summers are dry.

  7. 6- • a- What is a dzud? • The weather pattern of a dry summer followed by a harsh winter is called a dzud, by the people of Mongolia. • b- Explain why Mongolians fear dzud conditions. • This is because dry summers decrease the available food for their herds, which may then be too weak to survive a harsh winter.

  8. 7- a-What climate is found in northeastern China, the northern part of the Korean peninsula and northern Japan? Humid Continental b-What are the characteristics of that climate? Summers are warm, and winters are cold.

  9. 8-Why are some sites near the Equator cool? List two reasons. • Sea breezes help keep coastal temperatures more moderate. • High altitude also keeps temperatures low in tropical areas.

  10. 9- a-Define landslide Situations in which soil is washed down the hills. b-How does deforestation contribute to the problem of landslides in tropical rain forest regions? Heavy rains soaked treeless hillsides, leading to landslides have buried villages in the mud and killed villagers.
