  1. The Work of the Holy Spirit Great assistance from Mark Copeland’s “The Work of the Holy Spirit”

  2. Introduction • In the last couple of weeks we have looked at who the Holy Spirit is, a divine person and what we can do to sin against Him • Today we will take the time to look at what it is He does • First in looking at the history of mankind • Second, His involvement of the revelation of God’s redemptive plan for man

  3. The Spirit at Work in Creation • The Spirit assisted God in the creation of the universe • Gen 1:2; Ps 104:30 • The Spirit assisted God in the creation of the Heavens • Job 26:13 “By His Spirit He adorned the heavens; His hand pierced the fleeing serpent.” • This was done in conjunction with the work of the Son • Jn 1:1-3; Col 1:16-17

  4. The Spirit at Work in Creation • The Spirit assisted God in the creation of man • Gen 1:26-27 • The statement of Elihu in J0b 33:4

  5. The Spirit at Work in OT Times • Examples of the Spirit of the Lord given in the book of Judges • Judg 3:9-10; 6:34 • The accounts of Samson • Judg 14:5-6; 14:19; 15:14 • Accounts coming upon various prophets • Is 61:1; 2 Chron 24:20; Ezek 11:24 • The prophets of old spoke as they were moved by the Spirit • 2 Pet 1:20-21; 2 Sam 23:2

  6. The Spirit at Work in OT Times • The Spirit of God was in the prophets, testifying of things to come • 1 Pet 1:10-11; Is 53:4-6

  7. The Spirit at Work in NT Times • The Spirit was to guide the apostles into all truth • Jn 14:26; 16:12-13 • We can see the Spirit did this • 1 Cor 2:10-13; 1 Tim 4:1-3 • The Spirit was involved in confirming Christ was who He claimed to be • Mt 12:28; Acts 2:22; 10:38

  8. The Spirit at Work in NT Times • The Spirit was involved in the work of regeneration as the word was preached • The Spirit was working to convict the world (Jn 16:8) • Consider the example of the day of Pentecost in Acts 2 • The Spirit gave the apostles utterance (2:4) • Peter preached Christ (2:22-24, 36) • People in the audience felt convicted (2:37) • The people were encouraged to repent and be baptized (2:38-39) • Many gladly did so (2:40-41) • The Spirit convicts the world through His revealed Word whenever it is preached and those with good and honest hearts will hear and bear good fruit (cf. Lk 8:15)

  9. The Spirit at Work in NT Times • The Spirit was involved in the work of regeneration as the Word was obeyed • Those who obeyed the Spirit’s Word were baptized (Acts 2:38-41) • In their baptism they experienced a “washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit” • 1 Cor 6:11; Tit 3:5-7 • The Spirit is involved in our ongoing sanctification • Heb 2:11; 10:14 • Not in the sense of needing redemption Heb 10:10 • But in the sense of living Holy lives 1 Thes 4:3-5, 5:25

  10. The Spirit at Work in NT Times • God strengthens us by His Spirit in our inner man • Eph 3:16; 20 • It is with the aid of the Spirit that we put to death the deeds of the flesh • Rom 8:11-13; Col 3:5-9

  11. Conclusion • How important is the work of the Spirit...? • Our very being (physical creation) is a result of the work of the Spirit • Our eternal destiny (Spiritual regeneration) is dependent on the work of the Spirit • Sadly, many people resist the work of the Spirit in their lives. This occurs whenever one refuses to obey the Word of God revealed and confirmed by the Spirit (cf. Acts 7:51-53) • Are you of these people…?
