  1. DANIEL 9:20-27

  2. Rabbi Simon Luzzato: Let us shut up our books, for if we go on examining the prophecy we shall all become Christians.

  3. Context 9:1-19 – Daniel’s Prayer 9:20-27 – God’s Answer

  4. 24 Seventy weeks are determined for your people and for your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sins, to make reconciliation for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy.

  5. What is the subject of the prophecy? 24 Seventy weeks are determined for your people and for your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sins, to make reconciliation for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy.

  6. What is the time frame? 24 Seventy weeks are determined for your people and for your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sins, to make reconciliation for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy.

  7. What is a week? Shavuim = seven Seven = dozen NLT: 24a – A period of seventy sets of seven has been decreed for your people and your holy city . . .

  8. What is the context of seven? Answer: Years • 70 sets of 7 years (decreed for the Jews) • 70 X 7 = 490 years (before the Messiah comes) What is a year? • 360 days based on a Lunar Calendar • God has cut out of the calendar 490 years for the Jews.

  9. 25 Now listen and understand! Seven sets of seven plus sixty-two sets of seven will pass from the time the command is given to rebuild Jerusalem until a ruler—the Anointed One—comes. Jerusalem will be rebuilt with streets and strong defenses, despite the perilous times. 2 Divisions of 7’s (breaks down 490 years) • 7 sets X 7 = 49 years • 62 sets X 7 = 434 years

  10. 7 sets of 7 years = 49 years • Jewish Stopwatch Starts Ticking • 2 Stopwatches: Jewish & the Church 25b –From the time the decree to rebuild the city of Jerusalem is given . . . • 49 years to rebuild. • Rebuilt in perilous times.

  11. 62 sets of 7 years = 434 years (62 X 7) 25 Now listen and understand! Seven sets of seven plus sixty-two sets of seven will pass from the time the command is given to rebuild Jerusalem until a ruler—the Anointed One—comes. Jerusalem will be rebuilt with streets and strong defenses, despite the perilous times. • Anointed One = Meshiach = Messiah

  12. 62 sets of 7 years = 434 years 25 Now listen and understand! Seven sets of seven plus sixty-two sets of seven will pass from the time the command is given to rebuild Jerusalem until a ruler—the Anointed One—comes. Jerusalem will be rebuilt with streets and strong defenses, despite the perilous times. • 49 years + 434 years = 483 years = Triumphal Entry

  13. When did the actual decree go forth to rebuild the city of Jerusalem? Nehemiah 2:1 – And it came to pass in the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes . . . • 465 BC – 20 = 445 BC (or 444 BC) • 445 BC + 483 years = 32 AD (or 33 AD) • 483 years X 360 days = 173,880 days • Nisan 10, 32 AD = April 5, 32 AD • The actual day of the Triumphal Entry of Jesus.

  14. 26 After this period of sixty-two sets of seven, the Anointed One will be killed, appearing to have accomplished nothing, and a ruler will arise whose armies will destroy the city and the Temple. The end will come with a flood, and war and its miseries are decreed from that time to the very end.

  15. 26 After this period of sixty-two sets of seven, the Anointed One will be killed, appearing to have accomplished nothing, and a ruler will arise whose armies will destroy the city and the Temple. The end will come with a flood, and war and its miseries are decreed from that time to the very end. • Jewish Stopwatch is paused. • Point: The Messiah will be rejected.

  16. 26 After this period of sixty-two sets of seven, the Anointed One will be killed, appearing to have accomplished nothing, and a ruler will arise whose armies will destroy the city and the Temple. The end will come with a flood, and war and its miseries are decreed from that time to the very end.

  17. Harold Sevener: Only one person in all of Jewish history, or that matter in all of world history, could have fulfilled this prophecy in every detail. That person is Yeshua of Nazareth. Daniel is told, and we can calculate exactly when the Messiah, whom God promised to send to Israel would be cut off. (Daniel, God’s Man in Babylon, p. 153)

  18. 26 After this period of sixty-two sets of seven, the Anointed One will be killed, appearing to have accomplished nothing, and a ruler will arise whose armies will destroy the city and the Temple. The end will come with a flood, and war and its miseries are decreed from that time to the very end.

  19. Luke 19:41-44 – When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and wept over it, 42 saying, "If you had known in this day, even you, the things which make for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes. 43 "For the days will come upon you when your enemies will throw up a barricade against you, and surround you and hem you in on every side. . .

  20. 44 and they will level you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.(NASB)

  21. John 1:11 – He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. 12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.(NKJV)

  24. The Time Gap = Church Age Romans 11:25 – I want you to understand this mystery, dear brothers, so that you will not feel proud about yourselves. Some of the people of Israel have hard hearts, but this will last only until the full number of Gentiles comes to Christ.

  31. Zechariah 9:9-10 – Rejoice, O people of Zion! Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem! Look, your King is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious, yet He is humble, riding on a donkey—riding on a donkey's colt. 10 I will remove the battle chariots from Israel and the warhorses from Jerusalem. I will destroy all the weapons used in battle, and your King will bring peace to the nations. His realm will stretch from sea to sea and from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth.

  33. What we’ve learned up to this point: • Total – 70 sets of 7’s = 490 years • 1st set – 7 sets of 7’s = 49 years • 2nd set – 62 sets of 7’s = 434 years • Gap = Church Age • 3rd set – 1 set of 7 = 7 years • 49 + 434 + 7 = 490 What is remaining? 7 Year Tribulation

  34. 27 The ruler will make a treaty with the people for a period of one set of seven, but after half this time, he will put an end to the sacrifices and offerings. And as a climax to all his terrible deeds, he will set up a sacrilegious object that causes desecration, until the fate decreed for this defiler is finally poured out on him. • Ruler = antichrist • One set of seven = 7 years

(Reader, pay attention!) 16 "Then those in Judea must flee to the hills. 17 A person out on the deck of a roof must not go down into the house to pack. 18 A person out in the field must not return even to get a coat.

  41. “19 How terrible it will be for pregnant women and for nursing mothers in those days. 20 And pray that your flight will not be in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For there will be greater anguish than at any time since the world began. And it will never be so great again. 22 In fact, unless that time of calamity is shortened, not a single person will survive. But it will be shortened for the sake of God's chosen ones.”
