  1. Enhancing personnel safety with location tracking and person-object interactions using RFID technology [Presenter] In Collaboration with Hao-hua Chu (NTU CSIE & INM) Jane Hsu (NTU CSIE & INM)

  2. Objective • Monitor person’s behavior unobtrusively using cheap, readily available RFID technology. • Derive high-level personal safety context from low-level RFID data: • Where is the person? > Person location tracking • What are (dangerous) items the person have used (are using)? > Person-object interaction monitoring • Where are (dangerous) objects? > Object location tracking

  3. Scenario: Cooking Food Unattended • Mary wants to boil dumplings: • Walk to the kitchen • Grab a pot • Turn on water faucets and fill water in the pot • Add dumplings to the pot • Place pot on the gas burner • Turn on the gas burner • Telephone rings & leave the kitchen • How to recognize the dangerous unattended cooking behavior?

  4. Design Activity Inference Engine People’s Location Objects’ Locations Person-object Interaction RFID Middleware Caching Master Database Compact Database Sync RFID-tagged objects RFID reader wrist-watches Foot-based location tracking device External RFID Antenna ring

  5. Location-Aware Behavior Recognition Enter Kitchen • Walk to the kitchen > Mary-moves-to-kitchen:[person-location-tracking] • Grab a pot > Hands-touching-pot:[person-object-interaction] • Turn on water faucets > Hands-touching-faucet-handles: [person-object-interaction] • Place pot on the gas burner > Pot-changes-location: [object-location-tracking] • Turn on the gas burner > Hands-touching-burner-handles: [person-object-interaction] • Telephone rings & leave the kitchen > Mary-leaves-kitchen:[person-location-tracking] Recognizing Cooking Unattended Hands Touch Pot Hands Touch Faucet Pot Changes Location Hands Touch Burner Leave Kitchen

  6. Execution Plan

  7. Resource Request (I)

  8. Resource Request (II)

  9. Expected Results & Deliverables • Prototype of Indoor Location System • Prototype of RFID devices (wrist-watch and ring) • RFID person-object logging tool • Activity monitoring system • Project design and documentation report

  10. Expected Benefits • Provide core building blocks for RFID-based applications • Indoor people location tracking • Indoor object location tracking • Person-object interaction monitoring • Enable rapid prototyping of new RFID-based applications • Written how-to design document on HW/SW design and library APIs
